ASSG President Nigel Christensen attended Screen Forever on the Gold Coast last week. A great opportunity to meet and mingle with our industry producers and screen agencies to discuss future initiatives and keep the importance of sound for the screen high on the agenda!

Congratulations to Matthew Deaner and the while@team at for a wonderful event, a particular highlight being a rousing speech in support of Australian stories and artists from Minister for the Arts, at the SPA Awards. Also in attendance was Senator , another champion of Australian stories on our screens.

Vale James Valentine.

James was a friend of the ASSG and was our awards host for a number of years in the past, even striking up his saxophone skills with the band at one point! He will be sorely missed, condolences to his friends and family

Veteran ABC broadcaster James Valentine has died aged 64 after being diagnosed with cancer.

He began his media career in the 1980s and was best known for presenting Afternoons on 702 ABC Radio Sydney for more than 20 years.

Before moving into radio, James played saxophone in the rock band The Models, and presented a children’s television show.

Outside of the ABC, he was the movie reviewer for many years on Showtime and appeared on programs such as Sunrise, Midday and Good Morning Australia.

James was diagnosed with cancer in 2024 and retired in February this year.

He’s survived by his wife Joanne and their two children, Ruby and Roy.

Nearly 70% of viewers now watch with subtitles. Not because mixers aren’t doing their jobs — but because the path from a dub stage to a living room TV speaker is full of invisible obstacles. At the 2025 AES Show, a panel of CAS members broke down exactly why this happens and what can be done. Spoiler: it starts before the microphones go up. The full breakdown is in the Spring 2026 issue of CAS Quarterly.

On International Women’s Day we celebrate all the women who are ASSG members with a big shout out to these particularly awesome women who every day help keep the ASSG running and growing. Without them there would be no ASSG!

ASSG President Nigel Christensen was invited to attend the opening night gala of the Red Poppy Film Festival by the Veterans Film Foundation.

The Veterans Film Foundation provide pathways to those transitioning from the Australian Defence Force to employment in the film and TV industry through the Screen Warriors program.

The ASSG, and other guilds, are exploring ways to work with the VFF to support veterans looking to enter film and tv careers after leaving military service.

Congratulations to VFF Executive Chair Warwick Young OAM, and all festival staff and volunteers, for a brilliant opening night and festival at the Art Gallery of NSW.
