Ever wondered why magnetic surveys are flown or walked in carefully planned lines?

Survey lines aren't random. Their direction, spacing, and orientation are designed around the geology, terrain, survey objective, and the level of detail required.

Closer line spacing can help capture smaller features, while wider spacing can efficiently cover larger regional structures.

Good survey design is about finding the right balance between resolution, coverage, and efficiency.

Before the magnetometer collects its first measurement, the survey has already been carefully planned.

New magnetic data. New exploration targets. 🧲

A recent magnetic survey at Yukon Metals’ AZ Copper-Gold Project in Yukon has highlighted a previously untested convergence zone.

The 400-line-km survey used a GSMP-35U potassium-vapour in a UAV towed-sensor configuration, with 25 m line spacing.

The resulting magnetic data identified two intersecting structural trends that converge in an area associated with elevated copper values and surface mineralization.

It’s another great example of how high-resolution magnetic surveys can help geologists refine the geological picture and identify areas for follow-up exploration.

From the field to the final map. 🧲

What happens after a magnetic survey is completed?

1️⃣ Collect — A magnetometer records measurements across the survey area.

2️⃣ Process — The data is corrected and cleaned to remove effects such as diurnal variation and other sources of interference.

3️⃣ Map — The measurements are transformed into detailed magnetic maps that reveal patterns and anomalies.

4️⃣ Interpret — Geophysicists combine the magnetic data with geology and other information to understand what may be happening beneath the surface.

The magnetometer is just the beginning. It's the quality of the data—and how that data is interpreted—that turns measurements into meaningful exploration insights.

Take VLF surveys to the air. 🛩️

What if you could use Very Low-Frequency ( ) EM to investigate the subsurface in areas where traditional ground or manned airborne surveys are difficult?

The GEM Systems -VLF combines VLF electromagnetic surveying with UAV technology, allowing operators to efficiently map resistivity contrasts, geological contacts, faults, and conductive structures—even in challenging terrain.

With two lightweight VLF sensors, the system can simultaneously measure signals from two selected VLF stations while collecting detailed in-phase, out-of-phase, and horizontal field data.

At Vault Strategic Mining's War Bond Tungsten Project in Nevada, a high-resolution UAV magnetic survey is underway to help refine the geological picture and identify priority exploration targets.

The roughly 70 line-km survey is using tightly spaced flight lines to map magnetic features, structural trends, and geological contacts that may be associated with tungsten-bearing skarn and tactite mineralization.

The equipment used includes a GEM Systems GSMP-35U potassium vapour magnetometer ( ) and a GSM-19 Overhauser base station.

It's a great example of how modern UAV magnetics can complement geological mapping and sampling—helping exploration teams build a more detailed picture of what's beneath the surface before drilling.

Why do exploration teams start with magnetic surveys?

Magnetic surveys are often one of the first steps in understanding what's beneath the surface.

They can help geoscientists:
