Only a few hundred organisations worldwide hold ISO/IEC 42001 certification, the international standard for AI management systems.

That can look like low demand. We read it differently: organisations are adopting AI faster than they're training people to govern it. The questions are arriving now, and few people are trained to answer them.

Most people researching ISO certification think they're picking a course. They're picking a direction.

The implementer path is for people who build and run a management system inside an organisation. The course is useful straight away, and it pays off inside a job.

The auditor path is for people who audit systems others built. After the exam comes logging real audit experience, and auditing for a certification body is a separate approval that takes years. It pays off mostly outside a single employer.

One question usually settles it: do you want to build and run the system, or assess one that someone else built?

When a board or a customer asks about AI governance, they're rarely asking about the technology.

They're asking who is accountable when something goes wrong, how you manage a supplier you can't inspect, what data you're allowed to use, and what happens when a system fails.

Those are ISO/IEC 27001, ISO 31000, ISO 22301 and privacy questions. ISO/IEC 42001 adds a management system built specifically around AI, alongside them.

The first question isn't which AI standard you need. It's which standard your team needs training in.

More government and large-organisation tenders ask for certification as a condition of bidding. For many teams, that's the first time a management system standard comes up, and the timeline is already set by someone else.

If a tender asks for ISO/IEC 27001, the first step isn't choosing a provider. It's making sure the people involved understand what the standard asks:
→ what is in scope
→ how risk is assessed and treated
→ who owns the system

A Foundation course gives the team a shared vocabulary quickly. The person who will build and run the system usually goes on to Lead Implementer.

ISO/IEC 27001 asks organisations to audit their own information security management system at planned intervals, before any external certification audit.

That means someone inside the organisation, or someone it brings in, has to:
→ plan what will be audited and when
→ check whether the system is followed in practice
→ report findings so they get fixed

It's the part many organisations only think about once the certification audit is booked.

Organisations working on security often ask whether to follow the NIST Cybersecurity Framework or ISO/IEC 27001.

They do different jobs:
→ The NIST Cybersecurity Framework is a voluntary framework from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology. It helps organisations manage and improve their cybersecurity. Organisations can’t be officially certified against it.

→ ISO/IEC 27001 is an international standard for an information security management system. Organisations can be certified against it by an accredited certification body.

Some organisations use both: NIST to structure their security work, and ISO/IEC 27001 when customers or tenders ask for certification.
