New Call of Duty giving your PC trouble?

Another gaming PC successfully sorted out at Hammond Computing Solutions!

We recently had a customer bring in their gaming PC to get it ready for the new Call of Duty, only to discover their motherboard was still running BIOS firmware from 2021!

With newer games requiring security features like TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, some systems may need a BIOS update or configuration changes before they'll launch properly.

What we did:
Updated the motherboard BIOS
Checked the system configuration
Verified everything was running correctly
Launched and tested Call of Duty successfully!

The result? Game running, problem solved, and one happy gamer ready to jump back in!

Not every computer problem requires expensive new hardware. Sometimes, the right update and a little troubleshooting are all it takes.

PS5 DualSense Stick Drift Repair

This DualSense had a severe case of left-stick drift during testing, the horizontal axis was intermittently registering 100% left even with the stick released.

Instead of replacing the controller, I removed the original analog stick module and installed a new TMR magnetic joystick module.

After installation, the new stick was calibrated for centre and range, then the controller was fully reassembled and tested on both PC and PS5.

✅ Severe stick drift eliminated

✅ TMR magnetic joystick upgrade

✅ Centre and range professionally calibrated

✅ Full button, trigger, haptic and microphone testing

✅ Final testing completed on PS5

The finished TMR stick returned virtually dead-centre and achieved 6.9% circularity error, compared with 8.6% on the controller’s untouched original right stick.

Stick drift doesn’t always mean replacing the controller.

Gaming PC Case Transplant

This system came in with a failing case power switch, but the hardware itself was still in good shape, so rather than replacing perfectly usable components, we gave everything a new home.

The system was completely rebuilt inside a customer-supplied Cooler Master CM Storm case, including motherboard, GPU, power supply, storage and all front-panel connections.

Being an older enthusiast case, there was also some extra work involved getting its original fan controller and wiring sorted out. While everything was apart, the drive cages were reconfigured to turn the two case fans into direct front intakes, giving the GPU and CPU a much cleaner airflow path.

After assembly, wiring and testing, the system booted straight back into Windows and was ready to go.

Sometimes a PC doesn’t need replacing it just needs a new home

Toshiba Qosmio Back From the Dead

This older Toshiba Qosmio came into Hammond Computing Solutions with an RTC power error and eventually got stuck in a Windows boot loop.

After replacing the failed RTC/CMOS battery, further testing confirmed that the original hard drive was also failing.

The failing drive was replaced with a new SSD, followed by a fresh Windows installation — which proved a little more stubborn than expected on this particular machine, but we got there.

The end result:

✅ RTC/CMOS battery replaced
✅ Failing hard drive replaced with an SSD
✅ Fresh Windows installation
✅ System tested and running properly again
✅ Much faster startup and overall responsiveness

A good example of why older computers aren’t always ready for retirement. With the right repairs and a solid-state drive upgrade, they can still have plenty of useful life left in them.

Another one saved from the electronics graveyard!

PS5 Overheating / Shutdown Service

Another PS5 through the shop today!

The customer reported that newer games like UFC 6 and Madden were causing the console to get extremely loud and shut down, sometimes before he could even get into the game.

After opening it up, I found dust buildup throughout the cooling system and airflow paths. The console received a full internal cleaning, including the fan, heatsink area, vents and surrounding channels.

✅ Fan running noticeably quieter
✅ 22 minutes of post-clean testing on UFC 6
✅ No overheating or shutdowns during testing
✅ Console cleaned inside and out

I wasn’t able to reproduce the shutdown here, so I also recommended keeping the console in an open, well-ventilated area and making sure the rear exhaust has plenty of room to breathe.

Sometimes a good cleaning and proper airflow can make a huge difference before more expensive repairs are needed.

Nintendo Switch Lite Joystick Replacement

This Switch Lite came in with a left joystick that had seen better days… and by “better days,” I mean the thumbstick was completely gone. 😅

After a careful teardown, the damaged joystick assembly was replaced, the system was cleaned up, reassembled, calibrated and fully tested.

✅ New joystick installed
✅ Full range and centering verified
✅ Control stick calibration passed
✅ System tested before return

Another console saved and ready to get back into the hands of its owner!

Overheating doesn’t always mean dust!

This Xbox Series X was shutting itself down from overheating within minutes of loading into a game. A clogged heatsink or heavy dust buildup would normally be the first suspect—but upon opening it, the console was remarkably clean inside.

The real problem was underneath the heatsink. The thermal paste had uneven coverage across the main processor, preventing heat from transferring properly. Whether caused by the original application, age, or heavy use, it was enough to send temperatures climbing almost immediately.

After a full teardown, removal of the old paste, application of fresh thermal compound, and reassembly, the console passed gameplay testing in both Fortnite and Halo without overheating, shutting down, or excessively ramping up the fan.

Another Series X back up and running!
