All across Labrador and Quebec, there are placenames full of history and meaning, but chances are you’ve never heard of them.

innuplaces.ca highlights over 600 placenames of Nitassinan, the Quebec-Labrador Innu ancestral land, and is complete with photos, archival audio, and stories of living on the land.

There are placenames related to events, like Mashkutapish kanutikuet – ‘Where Mashkutapish (the dog) Chased Caribou’. Some are related to non-human creatures, like Kaminaush*t upishkutinam – ‘Hairy Creature’s Mountain’. Others speak to the weather, like Kameshtashtan – ‘Where it is All Blown Away’. All of them are evidence of a close historic relationship to the land. We’re proud to have contributed design and development to this project.

Congrats to Innu Nation and the team behind the Innu Pakassiun exhibit — now on display at the Labrador Interpretation Centre in North West River!

This exhibit, the first of its kind, showcases Innu material culture, from snowshoes and hunting gear, to kids’ toys and ancient stone tools. It shows the richness of Innu culture in Nitassinan with belongings gathered from The Rooms and the Canadian Museum of History, brought home together for the first time.

Working with La Boîte Rouge VIF, knowledge holders from Sheshatshiu and Natuashish, a team from the Rooms and 4 archeologists, our contribution was a logo and a look and feel based on traditional Innu designs and cultural practices.

Bravo Innu Nation on this milestone!

William Katshinak, Alice Katshinak, Sheshatsh*t, 1962. This photo depicted snowshoe-making was the inspiration for the logo.

These pattern sets were drawn from archival sources featuring Innu painted designs.

One of the centrepieces of the exhibit was an illustrated timeline.

The timeline traces Innu presence and history in Nitassinan, the Innu homeland that encompasses much of the Labrador-Quebec peninsula.

Jack Penashue examines belongings in the Innu collection at The Rooms, in preparation for the exhibit.

Highly decorated painted coats, designed for Innu hunters to honour the caribou spirit, are stunning examples of Innu design and artwork.

We are owin’ a lot of gratitude to Owen for being such a great intern! Great attitude, great work, great guy, and always strikes the right note. Today is his last day, but, we liked him so much, he’s gonna stay on for the summer.

Hundreds of stories, photographs, songs, records, interviews, and references — all put together in one digital space.

Axes for the Allies: The Wartime Foresters of Newfoundland and Labrador is an interactive project preserving the stories and experiences of those who supplied vital timber to the Allied effort during the First and Second World Wars.

The project combines rare historical photographs, audio recordings, music, personal letters, maps, educational content, and interactive storytelling into one fully accessible bilingual experience.

From the forests of Newfoundland and Labrador to the camps of Scotland and beyond, Axes for the Allies helps preserve an important piece of our history for future generations.

Funded through Digital Museums Canada and developed alongside the Grand Falls-Windsor Heritage Society, the project helps preserve and share the stories of the Newfoundland Forestry Corps and the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit — an important piece of history that deserves to be remembered.
