A Canadian school board warned families that student portals could go offline while critical security fixes were installed.

On October 23, the Waterloo Region District School Board said its teams were addressing serious PHP vulnerabilities affecting web-based infrastructure. Some sites and digital services could be taken offline as a precaution while updates were completed.

That decision raises a useful question for every organization that promises uninterrupted digital service: who has tested the plan for deliberately turning a critical system off?

Business continuity is not simply whether backups exist. It is whether teams can identify essential functions, communicate an interruption, switch to alternative processes, restore access safely and show what they tested beforehand.

Across the Informatica ecosystem, Verify™ Continuity and Recovery Assessments review recovery objectives, supplier dependencies, tabletop results, escalation records and the evidence behind restoration claims. An independently reviewed Statement of Trust™ can communicate the scope and limits of that work to boards and customers.

The best continuity plan is one management can demonstrate before an emergency forces the decision.

Microsoft says three criminal services enabled more than one billion malicious messages targeting over 75,000 organizations worldwide.

Its October 14 investigation describes a marketplace selling fake websites, compromised accounts and convincing impersonations of trusted organizations. Being impersonated does not mean a company's systems were breached.

But to a customer receiving a believable invoice, recruitment request or supplier notice, that distinction is not immediately visible.

What can a buyer check before sending sensitive records or money? Is the business legitimate? Are the security and privacy claims independently supported? Is there a current, scoped assessment that can be checked outside the company's own marketing material?

Informatica's Verify™ methodology helps organizations assemble and test that evidence. The Statement of Trust™ records what was assessed, by whom and for what period. Where implemented, a Trust Centre and Real-Time Verify badge should lead to current verification details, not simply display an attractive seal.

Impersonation thrives when nobody can check the claim.

Federal departments have a November 30 deadline to identify their highest-priority digital services under Ottawa's new AI-era cybersecurity direction.

The Government of Canada's October 1 security policy notice also calls for current architecture diagrams, internet-facing asset lists, tight vendor remote access, documented AI-agent identities and tested restoration from clean backups.

This is the kind of risk management that benefits from independent challenge. A list of critical systems means little if no one has checked whether it omits an externally reachable management interface or a supplier with standing privileges.

The practical question for every department, and for the businesses supplying essential services, is whether the underlying record is complete enough to support the next decision.

Informatica's Verify™ methodology reviews scope, asset evidence, control records, test results and remediation priorities. Assessments help leaders identify blind spots before formal reporting becomes a crisis exercise.

The government has named the deadline. Organizations still need evidence that the inventory can be trusted.

Informatica helps businesses validate Informatica security evidence or build it through Verify™ Risk Assessment Methodology, leading to Statement of Trust™ attestation where supported.

Security tools are still software, and software can fail.

Canada’s Cyber Centre has updated its advisory on vulnerabilities affecting Check Point security gateways after two flaws were added to CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalogue, a useful reminder that the controls organizations rely on for protection must themselves be tested and maintained. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security Patching known vulnerabilities is urgent, but it answers only one question. Organizations also need to know which systems are exposed, which controls are actually working, and where assumptions have replaced evidence.

Datarisk Canada’s Verify™ Security Risk Assessment examines vulnerabilities, tests safeguards and measures the effectiveness of security controls so organizations can make decisions based on evidence rather than confidence alone.

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner has put third-party privacy risk back in focus, and the lesson is a simple one: you can outsource the processing, but you cannot outsource the accountability.

Every supplier that handles customer, employee or identity data creates another point where privacy obligations can break down, often long after the contract is signed. Managed Privacy Canada’s Vendor Privacy Assessment, available through SupplyChainPrivacy.ca, helps organizations examine what data vendors receive, where it goes, who else can access it, how it is protected, and whether the evidence matches the promises.

A signed agreement is useful. Knowing what is actually happening to the data is considerably better.

Trust your suppliers, certainly. Verify them as well.

Why should proving your age require handing over your identity?

Will Canada Verify Age Without Collecting Identity Information?
Canada is considering new age-assurance rules for online services. The privacy question is whether those systems should collect driver’s licences, birth dates, photographs and other identity data or whether we can design something better.

We can.

Privacy-preserving digital credentials can prove a simple fact such as “over 18” without telling a website your name, birthday, address or licence number.
That changes the conversation.

In the latest issue of the Bad Privacy Blog (BPB), Claudiu Popa addresses European approach to zero-knowledge age proofs, what Canada can learn from it, and why privacy by design should mean preventing unnecessary personal information from entering the transaction in the first place.

There is something reassuring about a screen full of familiar logos.

Dropbox. Slack. HubSpot. Stripe. DocuSign. PayPal. Canva. Apps we see every day, now promising to make our work faster and more productive through AI.

But what data, permissions and business systems are you actually giving an AI assistant access to when you click the plus sign?

Canada’s Privacy Commissioner has just released new guidance calling on organizations to assess third-party service providers before adopting technologies that involve personal information.

In the latest issue of the Bad Security Blog (BSB), Claudiu Popa explains why AI integrations deserve the same scrutiny and outlines five practical checks organizations should make before connecting them to corporate systems.
