Miss Marble

Miss Marble Centuries-old tradition, passed down from generation to generation, which captures the moment in which you become one with the paint, the universe & the water.

Since 2014, Ebru has been included in the list of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage. Paper marbling is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce patterns similar to smooth marble or other kinds of stone. The patterns are the result of color floated on either plain water or a viscous solution known as size, and then carefully transferred to an absorbent surface, such as paper or fab

ric. Through several centuries, people have applied marbled materials to a variety of surfaces. It is often employed as a writing surface for calligraphy, and especially book covers and endpapers in bookbinding and stationery. Part of its appeal is that each print is a unique monotype. If you are interested on learning how to create colourful magic universes, please contact me to learn more about private workshops and classes. During the course you will learn basic patterns of Ebru and experiment with painting on water, marbling papers, marbling sketching and suminagashi. All materials are included.

Today I walked into a tiny washi paper place in Kyoto and stayed for an hour. We didn’t share a language, but that didn’t seem to matter.

She talked, I listened (and translated 😅)
me → Google Translate employee of the month 📱🔥

Somewhere in between, I learned that in Japanese, “paper” and “god” are both pronounced kami. Different characters, same sound.

After seeing the care behind her work… it didn’t feel like a coincidence.

Thank you for the recommendation 🥹

From Nara with ink-stained hands 🖤

Today at , I had the chance (even last minute) to be welcomed with a warm smile by Ink Master Yosh*teru Nagano, who generously shared a piece of his craft with me.

Sumi ink is not just ink. It’s time, patience, and tradition:
〰️ Soot is created by burning plant-based materials (pine wood or oil)
〰️ The soot is carefully collected and mixed with natural glue (nikawa)
〰️ The mixture is kneaded, sometimes scented, and pressed into molds
〰️ It is then left to dry and mature for months — even years

Each ink stick carries history, technique, and soul.

What made this experience even more special was his openness, making me feel truly welcome, and proudly sharing the tradition of sumi.

Moments like this are why I travel. Not just to see places, but to connect with people and their stories.

Arigato Gozaimasu!
