For universities, digital progress is often shaped as much by practical realities as by technological ambition. Infrastructure, budgets, internal expertise, adaptability and long-term maintainability all influence which solutions can actually work in practice.

We spoke with Rebecca Kangabe, Director of ICT Services at Uganda Christian University (UCU), about the realities of managing IT in higher education in Uganda, the role of open-source software, and why UCU chose Zammad for its Service Desk.

Localization is one of those product elements that shapes the entire user experience.

Thanks to our community contributor, Igor Costa, the Zammad user interface is now fully translated into Brazilian Portuguese. 🇧🇷

This kind of contribution often happens behind the scenes but makes a real difference for those who use the software daily.

🇩🇰 Zammad now speaks fluent Danish, largely thanks to the efforts of our community contributor Thomas Vibæk Meijer.

When he started, the Danish translation was only 43% complete, with just 1% approved. Thomas got to work translating string by string, and today he keeps it between 99% and 100% complete.

Due to his dedication we gave him reviewer rights. With this new role, he took on the task of approving the danish translations. He has already brought the approved translations up to 70%

For Thomas, this contribution is about more than just language. It is part of a broader mission:

“We chose to switch to Zammad SaaS because we want to slowly but steadily move away from US software and look for European alternatives.”

Open source software is built by people who care — individuals who dedicate their time, expertise and attention to detail to create more useful, accessible and independent tools.

And we are grateful to have an active community that helps make Zammad better, one contribution at a time. 💛

Meaningful commitment deserves real support. 💛

This year, our consultant, De Long, volunteered as a tent supervisor at a children’s camp. He was prepared to work overtime to make up for his absence, but we had a better idea: To support his volunteer work, Zammad gave him an extra day off.
