I don't create websites!

With a few exceptions, pretty much all of my work is supporting businesses with their existing websites (rather than websites I've created).

E.g. fixing problems, making changes, providing technical support, feedback on way forward, setting up, etc.

(Saying that - sometimes there's a lot of work to do on a website, that by the end there are so many changes it ends up gradually becoming a new website!)

"It's just a few lines of code."

This is a big myth that I often come across when making changes to websites (or software) - making what may seem like simple changes only takes a few minutes, and is just a few lines of code.

However, this is often not the case!

For example...

- Even if it is a few lines of code, those still need to be tested.
- Changes may also need to be made to databases, plugins, etc.
- Rest of the website needs testing to ensure nothing is broken (you'd be amazed what impact one line of code can make to everything else!)
- Depending on the changes server capacity, hosting, etc. need to be considered.
- Follow-up technical support and questions after changes are made.
- Documentation may need to be written or updated.
- Plans and scopes of work need to be discussed and agreed with the client.
- Ensuring any changes are part of the rest of the website.

Not forgetting that often it isn't just changing a line of code!

Overwhelmed by all the changes and things to fix on your website?

I often suggest to clients that work on their website be split into smaller pieces and done in different stages, rather than trying to do everything in one go.

This makes it easier to focus on each part or improvement to your website. Plus, its easier to manage, help with budgeting, ideal if you haven't done much with your website for a while, and allows for better testing of any changes.

It can also help identify where and who you'll need help from. For example, some changes you may handle yourself, while other parts may require a designer, or a developer (e.g. me!).

Website problems need fixing, or changes made?

I'm available for web work!

Why hire me?
- 15+ years experience.
- I've even written a book on WordPress!
- Development background, so can fix and resolve a lot of technical issues.
- I'll recommend the best solutions, even if it means I don't get the work.
- Not just large projects - a lot of my work is small fixes, one-off changes, etc.

Who do I work with?
- Mainly sole traders, self employed and one-person businesses.
- Supporting existing websites (rather than websites created myself).

When was the last time you looked at your contact form?

May seem like something minor, however it can often be overlooked and forgotten, even though it's the main way for potential clients to contact you via your website!

Some of the things that I often spot when carrying out my £35 website audits...

1) As few fields as possible, I even suggest combining the first and surname fields into a combined name field.
2) Making sure the contact form still works (sometimes people don't realise for a while!)
3) Still include your email address and phone number on your website, as not everyone can or will use the form.
4) I also don't like contact forms that include a "department" field, or ask what the enquiry is about - it's up to you to decide who should deal with a particular enquiry, not a potential client!
5) After someone sends a message, customising the message that's displayed (website owners often keep the default message, rather than having something friendlier).

Remember a contact form is often an initial enquiry from a client, not immediately onboarding. Some additional info you can get once you respond, contact them, and agree any work.

These small changes can often make it easier for people to actually contact you, rather than dealing with a form that's more complicated than it needs to be.

Also - check your email spam folder for any missed form messages, and make sure you reply to messages you actually receive. It's surprising how many businesses get messages, but don't even bother responding!
