People might ask why I recommend the mics I do.

It isn't because of the logo.

It's because I've spent years repairing them.

Every repair tells you something. You start to recognise the thinking behind a product.

Some were designed around the job they had to do. Others were adapted from somewhere else.

If I genuinely believed there was a better purpose-built headset mic for commercial fitness than the Aeromic or the EMic, I'd be selling it.

I don't.

I'm not into brands. I'm into good engineering.

Some products start with a marketing department.

Aeromic didn't.

It started with a conversation.

An electronics engineer, Peter Paisley, was asked if he could build a headset mic that would survive the realities of group exercise.

John Penhallow saw something else.

Not just a microphone. A better way of doing things.

One focused on solving the engineering problem.
The other made sure fitness instructors around the world could benefit from it.

That's the kind of philosophy I relate to.

A UK first for Health & Fitness... and perhaps a glimpse of where leisure centre AV is heading.

Last week we completed the first UK health & fitness installation of LD Systems' Questra at Downham Leisure Centre, operated by 1Life and Parkwood Leisure.

I've always believed the best technology is the technology people don't have to think about.

The new system gives staff simple tablet control of the Functional Area, Cardio Zone and Free Weights, making day-to-day operation quick and intuitive.

What really impressed me wasn't just the control. The combination of LD Systems DQOR 8 loudspeakers and IPA DSP amplification completely changed the feel of the gym. The music has more depth, more energy and a much bigger sound, creating an atmosphere that members immediately notice.

Until now, this level of intuitive control has largely been reserved for high-end AV projects. Questra changes that, making powerful, flexible control a realistic option for everyday leisure facilities.

A huge thank you to Lee Harper and the team at LD Systems, and to everyone at 1Life, Parkwood Leisure and Downham Leisure Centre for trusting Pulse Sound & Vision with this milestone project.

I'm incredibly proud to have delivered the first UK health & fitness installation of Questra. I don't think it'll be the last.

For years I've repaired headset mics.

You start seeing patterns.

Not because products are badly made, but maybe they were never designed for the environment they end up working in.

Fitness is a tough place for any electronics. Sweat. Shared equipment. Four, five or six classes a day. Instructors plugging in with seconds to spare.

After a while, you stop looking at logos and start looking at engineering.

Why has one mic survived countless classes while another hasn't?
What did one designer understand that others missed?

Every broken microphone teaches you something.

It changes the way you look at every new mic you pick up.

🩺 Mic Doctor

Here's a thought...

We often talk about how many classes an instructor teaches.

But, do you ever talk about how many classes the studio's headset microphone has been through?

Think about a busy studio.

Class after class.

Instructor after instructor.

Week after week.

It spends hours against your skin, exposed to sweat, salts, oils. electrolytes and constant movement.

Then it does it all again tomorrow.

So I'm curious...

What do you think is the biggest enemy of a shared fitness headset microphone?

No right or wrong answers. I'd genuinely love to hear your thoughts before I share some of the things I've learned over the years.

It's always nice when an old friend gets in touch.

Liyen from Hotpod Yoga Daventry called because she knew the audio experience inside the pod could be be so much better.

The existing bookshelf speakers did the job, but they simply couldn't create the immersive experience that Hotpod Yoga is all about.

The challenge wasn't just delivering great music either. Because the speaker system has to sit outside the inflatable pod, the audio needs to project naturally into the space, creating an immersive soundscape without drawing attention to where it's coming from. At the same time, the instructor's voice has to remain crystal clear above the gentle background noise of the pod's heating and air systems.

After looking at the space, the LD Systems CURV 500 ES with a couple of additions was the obvious choice. Its controlled dispersion and incredibly natural sound make it ideal for this kind of environment, filling the pod with rich, detailed audio while remaining compact and unobtrusive outside it.

Installation complete, and the difference is exactly what we'd hoped for. Rich, immersive music, crystal-clear instructor vocals and, most importantly, a sound system that complements the unique Hotpod experience rather than competing with it.

Thanks, Liyen. It's been a pleasure helping bring your vision to life. Over the years I've learnt that great sound isn't about filling a room with noise; it's about supporting the experience you want people to have.

If people walk out talking about how good the class felt rather than the sound system they listened to, we've done our job.

Mic Doctor Case File #248...

Cycle instructors, have you ever suddenly sounded like Aquaman halfway through a class? 🌊🤣

You know the sound.

Not crackling.

Not feedback.

Not distortion.

Just...

"Why do I suddenly sound like I'm teaching from the bottom of a swimming pool?"

As the Mic Doctor, I've seen this countless times over the years.

Most instructors blame the PA.

The radio system.

The batteries.

The studio gremlins.

But often it's none of those things.

It's sweat.

Lots and lots of sweat.

Now here's the interesting bit.

Most Group Exercise instructors move around the room. They jump, turn, demonstrate and generally keep changing position.

Cycle instructors don't.

They're often fixed in a forward-leaning position for 45 minutes or more.

As the sweat runs down your face, it finds the microphone boom.

Then it follows the boom.

Then it runs down the inside of the windshield.

Then it finds the capsule.

And once it's there...

Hello Aquaman. 🌊

Muffled audio.

Reduced clarity.

Members at the back wondering what interval they're supposed to be doing.

For years instructors simply accepted this as part of teaching cycle.

Then somebody had a really clever idea.

What if we stopped the sweat getting there in the first place?

That's why Cyclemic has its distinctive J-shaped boom.

It isn't styling.

It isn't marketing.

It's a surprisingly simple solution to a very specific problem.

The J-curve encourages sweat to run away from the microphone assembly instead of straight towards it.

One of those ideas that's so obvious when you see it, you wonder why nobody thought of it sooner.

Fitness audio has plenty of products.

Cyclemic is one of the few that was designed around a problem most instructors didn't even realise they had.

A proper hidden gem.

So be honest...

Who's had the Aquaman microphone experience? 🤣👇

Mic Doctor Case File #247...

I was handed this headset on Tuesday.

It did take me a moment. 🤣🤣

Then I realised. this was the instructor's daily used head mic.⚰️

Look closely and you'll see layer upon layer of tape holding it together.

Different colours. Different ages. Multiple repairs over what must have been quite a long period. About a year in fact.

And do you know what?

I don't see neglect. By the instructors at least....

I see instructors that are determined to keep teaching.

Fitness instructors are a funny breed. Give them equipment that's on its last legs and they'll find a way to squeeze another class out of it. Then another. Then another.

Not because they enjoy battling with equipment, but because they care about their members and they hate cancelling classes.

The thing is, (and this makes me REALLY ANGRY) microphones, belts and transmitters are YOUR tools of the trade. Just like a mechanic needs spanners and a chef needs knives, instructors 'like you' need reliable audio, am I right or, am I right?

A spare headset.
Spare aerials.
A spare belt.
A way to report faults.
Someone who can help before things get this far.

None of that is glamorous, but it makes a huge difference, doesn't it?

This headset tells a story.

Not of a broken microphone.

But of a bunch of instructors determined not to let a class down.

I'd love to know...

What's the most creative repair you've ever done in a fitness studio?

Come on, be honest. 🤭

The new AeromicUK Webstore is live 🎤

This has been a long overdue refresh, but I’m really pleased with where it’s landed.

AeromicUK isn’t a generic audio store. It’s a specialist fitness audio site built around the needs of Group Exercise instructors, indoor cycling instructors, PTs, studios and health clubs.

The new site should make it much easier to find the right mic, connector option, belt or accessory, whether you’re replacing a tired headset, upgrading your own instructor kit or putting together a full studio audio setup.

You’ll find:

• Aeromic, Cyclemic and E-Mic head mics
• Mic belts, cases, windshields and accessories
• Fitness Audio wireless systems and mixers
• AeroLink Bluetooth receivers
• Advice for instructors and clubs trying to choose the right kit

A big thanks to Nick for all his work on the rebuild. He did a brilliant job getting under the skin of what is quite a specialist little corner of the fitness industry.

Have a nose around here:

https://www.aeromic.uk/

And if you’re an instructor or studio operator who has ever had to battle with a crackly mic, a dodgy headset or a sound system that just doesn’t quite do the job, this one is for you.
