🌡️ The UK’s having its first proper heatwave of the year…
…and while everyone's worrying about keeping cool, some IT environments are feeling the heat too. 🔥 👀
If your infrastructure is still sitting on Windows Server 2012 or ageing 2016 environments, the temperature is rising there too.

Unsupported servers don’t just slow businesses down, they increase cyber risk, create compliance headaches and leave organisations exposed when something eventually fails.

The reality?
A server migration isn’t something you want to panic-buy during an outage or security incident.

Our latest guide breaks down:
☁️ Windows Server EoL timelines
🔒 The security and compliance risks of delaying
⚡ Cloud vs on-prem vs hybrid refresh options
📋 A practical migration roadmap for SMEs
💡 How to avoid the “reactive firefighting” approach

With Windows Server 2016 support ending in January 2027, now’s the time to start planning, before everyone else joins the migration queue.

Game 1 done ✔️ ...and somehow, we didn’t come last. 😮😂
Last night saw the launch of the with the first event, Dodgeball – and what a way to kick things off!

Huge shoutout to our brave (and slightly chaotic) team:
Mitchell Pask, Mitch Morgan, Joshua Anderson, Joshua Page and a last-minute sub in from Stuart Wilson, who stepped in with approximately 12 seconds of preparation. 👏

Against all odds, Nexus finished 5th out of 8 teams – which, considering the amount of dramatic diving, questionable throwing accuracy and flexing for the cameras, honestly feels like a win. 💪

Special mention to Joshua Anderson for those flexin' poses alone. How Becky Brennan at Simpkins Edwards LLP wasn't instantly won over, we'll never know 😅

As headline sponsors, we’re so proud to be supporting the Funder Games and helping raise money for our charity of the year Hospiscare ❤️

Thank you Hilton Ames Ltd for making this all happen and Paul Newman for putting his heart into it.

Next up: Table Tennis next month 🏓

And if your business is feeling a little left out… good news – we still have a few spaces available to join the games.

Trust us, you’ll regret missing it.

Another £1m ICO fine.
Another cyber attack that started with a phishing email.
Another organisation that thought it was “probably fine”.

This one hits hard for businesses because the findings weren’t about some advanced Hollywood-style hacking operation.

The ICO found:
• Attackers remained undetected for 20 months
• Only 5% of the IT estate was being monitored
• Unsupported legacy systems were still in place
• Basic security controls were missing

And the ICO made something very clear:
Proactive cybersecurity is no longer optional.

This is exactly why “reactive IT” is becoming such a dangerous approach for businesses.

Waiting until:
❌ systems go down
❌ staff can’t work
❌ customers are impacted
❌ or a ransom note appears
…is simply too late.

Most cyber incidents we see today aren’t caused by magic.

They’re caused by gaps that quietly build up over time:
🔸 unsupported infrastructure
🔸 lack of monitoring
🔸 poor visibility
🔸 unpatched vulnerabilities
🔸 weak user awareness
🔸 nobody strategically reviewing risk

Cybersecurity is no longer just an IT problem. It’s a business resilience issue.

And increasingly, regulators expect organisations to prove they were proactive before an incident happens, not after.

This is why businesses are moving towards:
✅ 24/7 monitoring
✅ vulnerability management
✅ proactive alignment reviews
✅ phishing protection & training
✅ stronger backup & recovery strategies
✅ security-led IT partnerships

Because prevention is dramatically cheaper than downtime, fines, reputational damage and operational chaos.

Reactive IT is dead.

Or at the very least… becoming very expensive.

A proper Managed SOC means your business is monitored 24/7 by real people. Not just software firing alerts into the void.
And with 43% of UK businesses experiencing a cyber breach or attack in the last 12 months, that level of protection is no longer a luxury.
It’s becoming essential.

Because cyber attacks don’t wait for office hours.

They happen:
🔹 Late at night
🔹 Over weekends
🔹 During holidays
🔹 When your internal IT team is asleep or offline

And the consequences are rarely “just IT problems”.

It’s:

⚠️ Teams unable to work
📞 Phones going quiet
😟 Clients losing confidence
💷 Revenue stopping
🔥 Leadership dealing with panic and pressure in real time

The hardest conversations usually start with, “We didn’t realise anyone needed to be monitoring that…”

The good news?

Enterprise-grade protection is no longer just for enterprise budgets.

We’ve worked hard to make our Managed SOC affordable for mid-sized organisations – combining 24/7 monitoring, threat detection and human-backed response support that’s there when you need it most.

✔️ No fearmongering.
✔️ No endless cyber jargon.
✔️ Just real protection from real people.

Because when something suspicious happens at 2:13am, you want somebody seeing it. Not finding it the next morning when it's frankly too late.

Mental Health Awareness Week matters.
Not because it’s a trend on LinkedIn for seven days… but because behind every inbox, every ticket, every meeting and every “I’m fine” is a real person carrying things you often can’t see.

At Nexus, we genuinely try to remember that.

Yes, we’re an IT company.

But our people are also parents. Carers. Friends. People navigating stress, grief, anxiety, burnout, pressure and life outside of work.

And the reality is… work can either add to that weight, or help lighten it.

That’s why we’ve worked hard to build a culture where people feel supported, not just managed.

From our Employee Assistance Programme, to flexible working, regular team check-ins, community volunteering days, wellbeing-focused Nexus Presents events, charity partnerships with organisations like Hospiscare, St Petrock's and Step One Charity, through to simply encouraging people to talk honestly when things aren’t okay.

Because support doesn’t always need to look dramatic.

Sometimes it’s:
🧡 someone noticing you’re quieter than usual
🧡 giving people permission to step away
🧡 reducing pressure instead of adding to it
🧡 checking in properly, not just saying “you alright?”
🧡 creating a workplace where people don’t feel they have to pretend

Businesses talk a lot about performance.

But people perform better when they feel safe, valued and cared for.

And in a world that feels increasingly busy, noisy and overwhelming… kindness at work matters more than ever.

Did you know Balloons Charity are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year? 🎈

An incredible charity right here on Pynes Hill, quietly doing life-changing work supporting bereaved children and young people across our community ❤️

It genuinely feels like one of those hidden gems… doing so much, but not always getting the visibility or support it deserves.

With their 20th anniversary coming up, it’s a great moment for local businesses to get behind them – whether that’s buying raffle tickets (with a hot air balloon ride up for grabs 👀), donating, or just helping spread the word.

Big thanks to Bertram Law for organising the recent Pynes Hill meet-up, and to Balloons for hosting us all.

We’re proud to support them here at Nexus and if you’re based on Pynes Hill, it’s definitely worth getting involved.

Every week, our apprentice Zac is getting incredible feedback like this. Not just “doing well for his age” feedback.

Genuine, consistent recognition for the impact he’s making.

And it’s great a reminder of something we don’t talk about enough…

👉 Bringing young people into the workplace isn’t a risk. It’s an opportunity.
Too often, businesses hesitate thinking:

“They need too much support”
“They don’t have experience yet”

But here at Nexus we believe, when you invest properly, you don’t just get an extra pair of hands, you build:

– Loyalty from day one
– Fresh thinking (they question what others accept)
– Energy and curiosity you can’t train into someone later
– A future talent pipeline that fits your culture, not someone else’s

And for them? It’s everything.

Confidence.
Real-world skills.
A sense of belonging.
A career they might not have found otherwise.

Zac’s progress is proof of that.

It's great to have Zac as part of the team and we know our IT Support client's benefit too from his energy and determination to succeed.

Huge shout out to you Zac!

Your IT team shouldn’t feel replaced by your IT partner.
They should feel backed.

Too many mid-market businesses bring in external support and accidentally sideline their internal IT function.

That’s where it goes wrong.

Because the best results don’t come from replacement, they come from reinforcement.

At Nexus, our IT infrastructure support is designed to strengthen internal teams, not override them:

– We take on the heavy lifting (servers, networks, security, complex escalations)
– We provide third-line expertise when things get tough
– We help build standards, structure, and long-term roadmaps
– We reduce the noise so internal teams can focus on what actually matters to the business

No ego. No stepping on toes. Just proper partnership.

The result?
✔ Internal IT teams feel supported, not stretched
✔ Faster resolution on critical issues
✔ Stronger, more secure infrastructure
✔ A clearer plan for what comes next

Good IT support isn’t about taking over it’s about making your people better at what they do.

Passwords are on the way out. Passkeys are the future.

And honestly, it’s about time.

Most attacks still start with:
→ stolen passwords
→ phishing
→ reused logins

Even with MFA, attackers are getting through.

Passkeys change the game:
✔️ No password to steal
✅ Nothing to phish
✔️ Tied to a device (face/fingerprint)
✅ Stronger security, less reliance on user behaviour.

So, what should you do now?

Start simple:
→ Enable passwordless/passkeys in Microsoft 365 or Google
→ Roll it out to high-risk users first (admins, finance)
→ Gradually remove password-based logins
