Established by Music Partnership North Newcastle and Newcastle University, Newcastle Sings is a city-wide celebration of all things sung, running between May - July 2022.

Newcastle itself has a diverse heritage and contemporary prowess for singing, singers and vocal collectives. Newcastle Sings will celebrate every single note sung in the summer of 2022.

We are thrilled to have collaborated with the Newcastle Sings team to facilitate the team’s brand journey, creating the visual identity, brand guidelines, brand style, website and selection of digital brand communication. All will be revealed in 2022, but here’s a sneak peak.

The Newcastle Sings brand has people, inclusivity, flexibility, diversity and creative confidence at its heart. Central to the visual style of the brand is the Newcastle Sings logotype which embodies the welcoming “all shapes and sizes” approach of the organisation.

Participation in Newcastle Sings activity is a small act of resistance to all the negativity happening in the world - or maybe a joyful moment to find your voice amongst others and enjoy a safe place to learn, find place and community, experiment, take creative risks, be themselves and develop artistic practice through community.

This interplay of ideas, equitable creative development and vision excites us and aligns many of our shared beliefs and values as a creative, community-minded studio.

The brand palette curates an adaptive, bright spectrum which expresses the inclusive culture, whilst also representing a sense of fun and confidence to be different. And it’s not just black and white - there’s a whole spectrum of people to be represented across Newcastle.

Here’s the new lyric video we’ve made in collaboration with Artist & Video Director for producer, composer and Unloved founder David Holmes’ new single, “HOPE IS THE LAST THING TO DIE” featuring Raven Violet immense vocals - out now on Heavenly Recordings.

It’s a thick, dusky slice of atmospheric pop and the song is a rally cry against the elites that have failed us.

Not just throughout the last 18 months of the pandemic, but by their continued failure to act on the threat of the climate crisis, on social inequality and dangerous power politics.

But around the world people are rising up with hope, positivity and solidarity ✊

Big love to Jimmy. Super collaborator, artist and human. It’s been a huge pleasure to see how he works and to apply our own design approach to be part of the filmmaking, animating and editing side of things. The sheer volume of images Jimmy produces for each project is awe inspiring and a challenge to curate and re-articulate into motion and create strong, visceral visuals and contribute to the fantastic source artwork in some way.

“In one breath it’s a call to arms for hope and change and in another an ambiguous visual journey” - Jimmy Turrell.

Fight the power, people. Together.

NEW WORK --

Brand identity design BBC Sounds, BBC Arts and New Creatives North commissioned project Obit. devised by theatre and live performance artist/practitioner Stan Hodgson.

Obit. is an artist audio project that essentially captures conversations from people as an obituary or remembrance of people recorded before, rather than after, they die.

We often work with cultural organisations, but this was a perfect opportunity to work directly with an artist. The brand identity is a container creatively reflecting the visual language of the subject and media of the Obit. audio project.

We were especially interested in making and bending various connections around spirituality, transcendence and tech. We designed a logo containing a halo, which also gives the idea of a full circle of a story. And created various digital textures, typography, datamoshed backgrounds and digitally-offset treatments for photography that communicate the visual identity for this beautiful project.

During our discovery conversations with the artist, thinking around the dwindling use of analogue news print obituaries and the rise of the digital nature of how people’s legacy will be recorded, reformatted and stored/eroded in the future was something we were really intrigued by.

This is a teaser and the live project will be available to experience on the BBC website soon.

NEW WORK --

Brand identity design for youth employability programme , powered by & , designed to integrate into the UpRising master brand, but with a distinctive, bang up-to-date affinity.

The vision of Stand Out is a UK in which young people from Black, Asian, minority ethnic and White working class backgrounds have just as good a chance at securing good jobs and decent employment as those who have the privilege of strong personal networks, have access to knowledge and experience of higher-paid sectors, or who have the confidence to look at such roles and feel they are appropriate and equally suitable for them... because they absolutely are.

The essence of the logo is a set of three symbols created from one.

It’s a representation of a platform with one part pushed upward, standing out from its start position, rising up and establishing itself at the next next level up.

This provides a graphic representation in the boldest terms, of what the ultimate experience of the Stand Out programme does for its brilliant young people.

Namely, in providing a platform to connect with peers, mentors, and networks to enable participants to stand out and get the boost they need to overcome various social and economical barriers to begin their journey towards fulfilling their potential at the very top level in their chosen field.

Some see this shape as a podium, elevating steps or a gravity-defying platform - these are all correct interpretations. There are more.

In this way, the logomark works as a universal visual language, even without any naming typography, as a defiant symbol of change.

Look at that R!

The R rate in the studio is very much under control.

Working on refining a few logotype design ideas for a digital agency brand project this morning - and we just had to share this incredible individual character.

Can you guess what typeface it is?
