Ex-Disney Techie Gets 3 Years for Sabotaging Menu App.

(Why is it always a man from Florida?)

A former Disney employee, Michael Scheuer, has been sentenced to three years in federal prison and fined nearly $688,000 for tampering with a Disney software system used to manage restaurant menus.

Scheuer, from Winter Garden, Florida, pleaded guilty to charges under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and aggravated identity theft. His sentencing followed a plea deal accepted by a Florida federal court earlier this year.

Before his firing in June 2024 for misconduct, Scheuer worked as a Menu Production Manager. Disney described the termination as hostile. In retaliation, Scheuer accessed Disney’s third-party-hosted Menu Creator application in July and made unauthorised alterations.

He swapped out the specified fonts in the app’s configuration files with Wingdings, causing menus to display unreadable text across all restaurants. The system malfunctioned and was offline for up to two weeks, ultimately leading Disney to retire the platform altogether.

Scheuer also altered images and background files, rendering menus as blank white screens.

Disney responded by locking down the app and resetting credentials. Despite these measures, Scheuer managed to regain access using three methods: an old admin account, a contractor-accessible URL, and a VPN service (Mullvad). Investigators linked the attacks to him by identifying VPN IP addresses he'd previously used for Disney email access.
