Customs have somehow charged crazy import fees on several of the last purchases from Electron Analog.
For example, 3x Electron X-Out had £44.61 fees added (£32.61 VAT plus £12 handling fee) which has not only never happened before ever, but breaks the import model completely.
Firstly, the value was £96. VAT on imports is 20% in the UK so this should have been £19.20 plus the handling fee (but normally I'm not charged it).
Now I'll have to either fill out a BOR286 form to claim the overpayment back with Border Force (for Royal Mail only) or for a private courier there is a separate process (EVRI or DHL as an example) using digital form C285.
The break-even cost of these is now £64.87 (unless part-refunded) plus postage so we may not be able to continue importing them for sale. I've been speaking to Shane at Electron about it, in the last hour.
Sad times in the UK. It appears the Government are over-taxing on imports to the tune of 36% if you include the handling fee (should be 20% max) to get extra money, probably because they have swamped the country with illegal immigrants then give them everything free.
Whats hilarious, is that if we post TO the US, we have to pay it all in advance, so why is it not done the same in reverse?
If you are wondering why this has been allowed to happen in Europe, well my answer would be that the baby boomer generation is at retirement age and living longer and it completely breaks the pension model. They seem to think this will fix it but it's actually financial su***de.
