๐จ๐ก MAJOR TELECOM UPDATE (Pakistan): Ufone + Telenor Pakistan heading toward a MERGER under PTCL! ๐ต๐ฐ
Hereโs what this really means for your SIM, signal quality, 4G / 4G+ speeds, and the 5G roadmap ๐
โ
Whatโs going on?
๐ PTCL (parent company of Ufone) has formally submitted an application to PTA to merge Telenor Pakistan into Ufone (PTML).
PTA will assess network infrastructure, tower assets, business plans, andโmost criticallyโlicences and spectrum consolidation. Once PTA review is complete, the process typically moves to SECP and then to a court-approved Scheme of Arrangement for final approval.
๐๏ธ PTCL has already completed the acquisition of Telenor Pakistan and Orion Towers on Dec 31, 2025. During the transition period, Telenor will continue operating as a separate entity, followed by integration once regulatory approvals are granted.
๐ฅ What does this mean for existing Ufone & Telenor users?
โ
Short term (now โ next few months)
๐ฑ Your SIM, number, packages, and services remain unchanged.
No sudden shutdowns are expectedโtelecom mergers are rolled out in phases to avoid nationwide disruption.
๐ Medium term (post-approvals)
Gradual technical changes will begin, including:
๐๏ธ Tower and site optimization
๐ถ Frequency and spectrum re-tuning
๐ง Core network integration
๐ Expanded 4G / 4G+ coverage in areas where either network was previously weak
โ ๏ธ Some localities may experience temporary performance dips during tuning (handover adjustments, congestion rebalancing). This is a normal part of large-scale network integration.
๐ก The REAL story: Spectrum (LTE bands) โ why it matters
Because spectrum = coverage + capacity.
๐ต Telenor Pakistan (key spectrum holdings)
According to Telenor Groupโs official spectrum disclosures, Telenor Pakistan holds:
๐ 850 MHz (Band 5): 2ร10 MHz โ
(excellent indoor & wide-area coverage)
๐ 1800 MHz (Band 3): 2ร8.8 MHz โ
(primary 4G capacity band)
๐ 2100 MHz (Band 1): 2ร5 MHz โ
(additional capacity layer)
๐ 900 MHz: 2ร4.8 MHz (legacy / coverage layer depending on region)
Widely reported and well known: Telenorโs paired 10 MHz at 850 MHz is a major low-band advantage.
๐ข Ufone (PTML) key spectrum strengths
๐ Ufoneโs 2021 NGMS auction win expanded its 1800 MHz holdings to 15 MHz (reported by Reuters).
๐ Ufone also secured 5 MHz in the 2100 MHz band during the 2014 NGMS auction.
๐ง What does the merger enable from a technical perspective?
1๏ธโฃ ๐ถ Spectrum โRationalizationโ (making blocks contiguous)
Pakistan has already carried out 1800 MHz rationalization to improve contiguity, and current policy direction strongly favors contiguous spectrum in 1800 / 2100 MHz after auctions.
โก๏ธ Contiguous spectrum = wider carriers = higher efficiency & better performance
2๏ธโฃ ๐ More 4G+ (Carrier Aggregation)
A merged network can intelligently combine bands such as:
โ
850 + 1800 CA โ coverage + speed
โ
1800 + 2100 CA โ capacity boost
โ
Improved load balancing between low-band and mid-band layers
๐ฒ Will 4G / 4G+ speeds go up or down?
โ
Why speeds can improve
๐ฅ Larger combined spectrum pool
๐๏ธ Better capacity in busy urban hotspots
๐ Stronger indoor signal quality (thanks to 850 MHz)
๐ More carrier aggregation (4G+) opportunities
โ ๏ธ Why speeds may temporarily dip (in some areas)
๐ง Site consolidation and re-tuning can create short-term congestion pockets
๐ก Parameter changes may briefly impact handovers
โก๏ธ Overall expectation: with proper PTCL investment, the average user experience should improve, especially indoors and in rural areas.
๐ How important is Telenorโs 850 MHz (Band 5)?
โ
Best suited for:
๐ Indoor coverage
๐ฃ๏ธ Highways and rural connectivity
๐ถ Stable signal at cell edges
โ Not a โpeak-speedโ band on its own
โก๏ธ The real speed gains appear when 850 MHz is combined with mid-bands (1800/2100) via 4G+ CA.
๐ก Does this mean 5G will arrive sooner?
It improves the chances, but timing still depends on spectrum auctions and rollout economics.
PTAโs upcoming auction planning includes new bands such as:
๐ 700 / 2300 / 2600 / 3500 MHz (with 3500 MHz being the primary global 5G capacity band)
โก๏ธ A larger merged subscriber base + unified capex significantly strengthens PTCLโs ability to deploy 5G once spectrum is secured.
๐ฏ Final verdict (quick & simple)
โ
More consistent coverage likely (Telenorโs 850 MHz is a big win)
โ
Stronger 4G+ potential (carrier aggregation + rationalization)
โ ๏ธ Temporary instability possible during integration
โ 5G timing depends on auction results (especially 3500 MHz) and investment strategy
