There are now a number of ‘low- cost’ platforms that make it incredibly easy for you to put together a DIY website that can look quite decent. On the face of it, it’s a bargain.
However, building a website and building a website that actually works for your business and is a successful site are two very different things.
On the face of it, a website can look ‘pretty’ and well designed, but if the content is poorly structured and not key phrase focused, or has weak or non-existent calls to action, has a poor mobile experience and has large images slowing the website down, it is potentially doing you more harm than good.
Some companies just need a ‘brochure’ site, and I get that if sales are generated via other means. But a website should, at the very least, make you look professional, and trustworthy and visitors can find what they are looking for. A really successful website does this and generates good leads for you on a continuous basis.
The biggest danger with a DIY website isn't that it looks terrible, but that it just looks good enough. Good enough to convince you that you've done the job, but it may be costing you customers every single day.
Building a website is easy, but building one that successfully makes money is considerably harder.
And if your website is one of your most important sales and marketing tools, perhaps "I'll just build it myself" isn't actually the bargain you think it is.
