Think About It Thursday | Are Your IP Requirements an Afterthought?

On Tuesday, we explained why the number of public IP addresses available to your business isn't always as straightforward as the subnet size suggests.

But here's a question...

Do you know how many public IP addresses your business actually needs?

Depending on your setup, you may require additional IP addresses for:

Multiple firewalls or separate network environments
VPN connectivity and remote access
Hosting applications or services
Multiple businesses sharing the same connectivity infrastructure

And here's where planning ahead matters.

Discovering that your business needs additional IP addresses during installation or handover can result in:

❌ Additional monthly costs

❌ Changes to your service configuration

❌ Delays to service handover

❌ Additional engineering or configuration work

Different providers have different methods of allocating and delivering public IP addresses, so it's important to establish your requirements before placing the order.

At FLX Telecom, we take the time to understand your technical requirements upfront, helping ensure your connectivity is delivered correctly from day one.

Are your public IP requirements part of the initial conversation, or an afterthought?

Tech Tuesday | Do You Understand Public IP Allocations?

When ordering business connectivity, you might hear your provider refer to a /30, /29 or /31 IP range.

But do you know how many of those IP addresses your business can actually use; or even better, how many the business needs?

The answer depends on both the subnet size and how your provider delivers the service and your needs as a business.

Let's take an example of a /30 subnet from our main supplier.

A /30 contains 4 IP addresses, but that doesn't mean your business gets 4 addresses to use.

192.0.2.0 – Network Address

192.0.2.1 – Provider Gateway

192.0.2.2 – Customer Usable IP

192.0.2.3 – Broadcast Address

4 addresses in total, but only 1 available to you to use...

This is particularly important for businesses requiring multiple public IP addresses for firewalls, VPNs, hosted services or separate network requirements.

The key takeaway? Don't assume the size of your allocated subnet tells you how many public IP addresses you can actually use.

Think About It Thursday | Can You Access Your CCTV Remotely?

Imagine you've got CCTV installed at a remote site, storage yard or business premises.

Everything is recording as it should, but what happens when you need to access the system remotely?

A standard mobile SIM might provide connectivity, but it doesn't always allow the direct remote access you need.

This is where a managed SIM with a Private APN can help.

Combined with the right network configuration, it can provide:

âś… Secure, controlled access to remote equipment.

âś… Private IP addressing without exposing devices directly to the public internet.

âś… Reliable addressing for remote monitoring and maintenance.

It's not just about getting your equipment connected; it's about making sure you can access it when you need to.

Does your business have equipment at remote locations that you struggle to access or manage?

Tech Tuesday | What Is a Private APN?

Ever wondered how businesses can securely connect remote devices and sites using mobile networks?

The answer could be a Private APN (Access Point Name).

An APN determines how a mobile device connects to a data network, and, while standard mobile SIMs typically use an internet-facing APN, a Private APN provides a dedicated, logically separated route for business data

Why would a business use a Private APN?

âś… Enhanced Security -> Keep business traffic separated from general public mobile internet traffic.

âś… Secure Remote Access -> Enable controlled connectivity to remote routers, equipment and business systems.

âś… Centralised Management -> Manage connectivity across multiple sites and devices through a common network configuration.

âś… Flexible Connectivity -> Ideal for remote offices, CCTV, IoT devices and businesses requiring connectivity in locations without fixed-line broadband.

Its important to remember that a Private APN isn't automatically an encrypted connection, but it provides an additional layer of network separation and control. It's

At FLX Telecom, we provide managed mobile connectivity solutions, including Private APNs and static/public IP addressing, tailored to how your business operates.

Business connectivity isn't just about getting online; its about connecting the right systems, securely and reliably.

Tech Tuesday | Can You Run a Corporate VPN Over 4/5G?

Short answer is yes, however, it's not always as simple as putting a SIM into a router.

We recently had a customer approach us after their landlord advised that an existing internet connection was being removed.

The challenge? They needed a replacement connection that would allow them to maintain their corporate VPN and access their company network securely.

With timing scales being short and looking at a fast, low cost solution, we looked at a managed 4/5G solution.

Here's what we're proposing:

Managed 4/5G SIM; With a private APN and appropriate static/public IP addressing to support their VPN requirements.

External Antenna; Installed to improve mobile signal reception and provide a more reliable connection.

Teltonika RUTX50 Router; Providing the 4/5G connectivity, with an IP bridge/passthrough configuration to hand the connection over to the customer's existing Fortinet firewall.

Existing Firewall & VPN – Allowing the customer's IT team to retain control of their existing firewall and VPN configuration.

The important bit?

Not every 4/5G SIM is suitable for this type of setup. Understanding the customers requirements and what they needed from their connection, lead to this being the most suitable solution.

Sometimes the right business connectivity solution isn't the standard.

At FLX Telecom, we look at the requirements first and find a solution that works.

Think About It Thursday | What Does an Hour Offline Actually Cost Your Business?

No internet.

No cloud systems.
No Teams.
No VoIP calls.
No card payments.
No access to customer systems.

For some businesses, an hour offline is an inconvenience.

For others, it means staff sitting unable to work, missed calls, lost sales and unhappy customers.

We spend a lot of time talking about the cost of connectivity.

But maybe the better question is:

What is the cost of having no connectivity at all?

Something worth thinking about.

Think About It Thursday | Are Your Calls Being Recorded; and Does Anyone Actually Listen to Them?

Call recording is one of those features many businesses pay for because it sounds useful.

But once it’s switched on… what happens next?

Are calls ever reviewed?

Are they being used to help train staff?

Could they help settle a disagreement over what was actually said?

Are managers using them to understand how customers are being handled?

Or are thousands of recordings simply sitting there untouched?

Call recording can be incredibly useful for quality, training and accountability, but simply having the feature doesn’t automatically provide any value.

Sometimes the better question isn’t:

“Can our phone system record calls?”

It’s:

“What are we actually doing with them?”

We’d rather make sure your phone system works for your business than simply fill it with features you never use.

Tech Tuesday | What Does 'Contention' Even Mean?

You might have heard the terms 'contention ratio', 'contended' or 'uncontended' when discussing broadband or fibre for your new office.

But do you know what they actually mean and why they're important?

Essentially, standard broadband services such as SoGEA and FTTP are classed as 'contended'.

Think of it like a road. You have your own road connecting your business to the wider network, but at some point, it joins a larger road that's shared with other businesses.

The more traffic using that shared road, the greater the potential for congestion.

This is where contention ratios come in. You might see ratios such as 20:1, where up to 20 customers share a pool of network capacity, or 8:1, where that capacity is shared between fewer customers.

So, what about uncontended connections?

Dedicated fibre connections, also known as leased lines, are different. Think of these as having your own private road, with dedicated bandwidth that isn't shared with other customers on the way to your provider's network.

This is known as a 1:1 contention ratio.

Why does it matter?

Understanding contention helps you know what you're buying and why two connections advertising the same speed might perform differently.

It also helps you decide whether standard business broadband meets your needs or whether dedicated connectivity, typically accompanied by stronger service guarantees, is more appropriate.

After all, it's not just about the speed you're buying. It's about the performance your business needs.

Think About It Thursday | Are You Paying ÂŁ60.00 Just For Your Phoneline?

We were recently approached from a customer who had a standard multiline for their business.

Nothing strange there. 3 office users, more often 1 or 2 in the office. Perfect scenrio for a multi-line.

What was strange was the bill...ÂŁ60.00 per month plus VAT, with another ÂŁ27.00 plus VAT in calls.

Now, we know with the PSTN switch off, Openreach have been increasing wholesale costs. The increased by 20% in April, another 40% in July and they will go up ANOTHER 40% in October (https://www.openreach.com/news/openreach-announces-price-changes-to-encourage-digital-adoption-of-newer-more-reliable-and-better-value-technology/)

That's wholesale too; expect your bill to go up even more by the time the invoice reaches you.

It's such an easy fix and can save your business 50% or more in operating costs to move to Internet Phone (IP) solution.

Calls included. Soft client included. All the options your business could probably need.

Don't hang around until it's too late.

Lead times will increase as demand increases for last minute movers.

Still on a copper phoneline and not sure where to start?

Get in touch today.

Tech Tuesday | Router vs Firewall. What's the Difference?

Your business has the internet connection coming in; but what is actually controlling your connection?

That's where your router and firewall come in and, although they often work together, they serve different purposes.

Think of a router as the traffic controller for your network, connecting different networks, such as your office network and the internet, to the right location.

Think of your firewall as the security guard, deciding what traffic is allowed through. It controls network traffic based on security rules, helping prevent unauthorised access and unwanted connections.

So, do you need both?

Yes! However, that doesn't necessarily mean two separate devices.

Many business-grade routers include built-in firewall functionality, while dedicated firewalls offer more advanced security features, such as intrusion prevention, application control and detailed traffic monitoring.

For businesses, it's not just about having a fast internet connection. It's about ensuring your network is connected, properly managed and protected.
