A little piece of history. In a slightly unexpected place.

Our office is in a converted church, so it’s perhaps no surprise that we have a few reminders of the building’s past.

One of them is this memorial plaque, dedicated to the church warden and his wife. A lovely little piece of local history, quietly watching over the building…

Although, we have to admit, its current location is a little unconventional. 😂

Yes, it’s on the wall in our loo! 🚽

Not quite the usual place to find a piece of history, but it’s one of those little quirks that makes our workspace what it is.

If our walls could talk, we reckon they’d have a few stories to tell! ⛪

From brand characters to cuddly companions! 🧸

Do you remember the rebrand we created for Hardy’s Events last year?

As well as giving their brand and website a fresh new look, we designed some fun illustrated characters for their Soft Play Hire.

And now… they’ve come to life! 💜

Two of our characters have been turned into plush toys, which Hardy’s give to children celebrating their birthdays with their soft play hire. How lovely is that?

We’ve even got a pair of our own living in the Be Smart office! 🥰 (They’re great company, even if they’re not much help with the admin!)

It’s so lovely to see our designs become something little ones can cuddle, play with and take home as a special birthday keepsake.

From a little idea in the studio to a cuddly toy at a birthday party. We love seeing where creativity can take you! ✨

🔒 WEBSITE SECURITY ALERT. WE’RE ON IT.

Serious security vulnerabilities have been reported in PHP, the technology that powers millions of websites, including WordPress.

So, what are we doing about it?

At Be Smart, we’re reviewing the websites we manage, checking PHP versions and working with hosting providers to identify any necessary security updates.

PHP runs on your website’s hosting server and, just like your computer’s operating system, needs to be kept up to date.

Some older websites may need additional checks to ensure updates can be applied safely without disrupting the website.

If Be Smart manages your website, we’re on the case and will contact you directly if further action is needed.

And if your website is managed elsewhere? Now’s a good time to ask your hosting provider whether your PHP version is supported and up to date.

Because a great-looking website is one thing. A secure, reliable website is just as important.

Throwing it back to a massive internal branding project we did for Midland Heart in 2019.

When they launched their Making What Matters Brilliant initiative, they wanted to truly inspire their team. We started by creating a fresh campaign logo and a custom set of icons. Then we took that design and ran with it.

We transformed their corporate plan from a standard document into a fully immersive visual experience. The new branding flowed straight onto the walls of their Birmingham head office and across all their printed merch and giveaways.

Midland Heart provides safe and affordable homes for over 70,000 people across the region. It was a privilege to help them create a vibrant, engaging workspace for the staff who make that happen every single day.

ARCHIVE REWIND....

This was a cracking logo and brand identity project to work on – a new brand of craft b**r, yum! We partnered with Kraters to do a ‘dig deep’ session looking at vision, mission, values, personality, tone of voice and audience persona. Once the brand strategy was in place we created a new logo, brand identity and packaging.

With it being a craft b**r, it was important to establish a handcrafted look and feel so our concepts were developed with a more rustic feel and hand stamped typography. We also advised on packaging material which was corrugated with Kraft outer layer for print quality.

😭 Things that make designers cry…

Luckily, crying like a baby is a pretty rare occurrence for us designers.

We do have our little things, though…

❌ 7 different brand fonts
❌ A logo living happily in a Word document
❌ “Can you make it pop?”
❌ That one slightly different shade of green

We joke, but there is a method to our madness. 😅

Consistency helps a brand feel recognisable, professional and trustworthy — whether it’s on a report, presentation, website or social post.

So if your brand files are causing a few designer feelings… don’t worry.

We promise not to cry. Probably. 😂

It’s only a colour…

“Can we make it a little more blue?”
“What about a brighter green?”
“Could we try something completely different?”
“I don’t know… I just don’t like that one.”

Meanwhile, the designer:

We promise we’re not being difficult. 😂
Because colour isn’t just colour.
It’s part of your brand.
It sets the tone.
It helps people recognise you.

So yes…

We care about that particular shade of blue.
Probably more than most people do. 😏

And if we’re gently steering you back towards the brand palette?
There’s probably a reason.
