Test My Tattoo Success Story

A brand and website we setup over 3 years ago has seen incredible success by providing high quality, custom temporary tattoos through an engaging and user-friendly website.

This past month Test My Tattoo have seen a huge rise in orders, primarily in bulk. With the weather getting hotter it’s easier for people to show off the tattoos and it also means more outdoor events, festivals and functions for them to be handed out at.

We consistently monitor and improve the website, making small amendments monthly to the user experience to ensure the site is as effective as possible for converting, without the need for customers to even get in touch. This is achieved through building trust and usability, and listening to customer feedback.

The strength of the website alone has brought in orders from big corporate brands such as Nike, Coach, BMW, Rubicon, Netflix, JCB and Brew Dog.

We have also had various charities reach out for help to support a good cause and it’s been great to offer discounts and incentives to help support our community.

Some charities and community events have included RSPCA, CoppaFeel, War Child, Love Oliver, as well as various student events, Pride awareness campaigns and even Team GB at the Olympics.

Let’s not let digital design go the way of the lamp post.

It seems like everywhere you look now - things are becoming more and more generic, regurgitated copies of each other. It’s becoming more difficult to get real unique beauty these days. Care, depth and creativity are often seen as wasted time and not cost effective, so a more streamline approach is usually taken.

With Ai on the rise, this problem is only being exacerbated. Whatever is the “gold standard” of design becomes the norm and anything different is just seen as inferior.

As a comparison- the same thing has happened with beauty standards in Hollywood. Most Hollywood actresses have the same, generic look these days. Good looking, unique faces feel the pressure to have surgery or injections to blend into the norm - still good looking but somehow generic and no character.

The classic example of this is the street lamp post. The ornate, beautiful designs from the 19th century just weren’t cost effective enough for the modern world and so we’re left with dull, lifeless clones along our streets. They look fine enough and do the job but it’s just a small bit of beauty now lost.

The same can inevitably happen with digital design - websites, logos, graphics, marketing materials etc etc. The most cost effective way will be to have Ai generate them which will look good, but will feel void of character and unique thought.

Let’s try our best to ensure this doesn’t happen. Ai should only be used as the middle man, to take the grunt work out. The end points of any job should always be done by a human. This includes the initial thought process, concepts and ideas, as well as any finishing touches, unique input and client interaction.

Trust and Usability- the only 2 words web designers need to focus on.

These two words are the core of everything a website needs to do. It covers everything from - converting a lead, or selling a product through to simply informing the user or marketing a brand. Anything you want your website to achieve will pretty much always come down to these two words. If you can build enough trust and make it as easy for the user as possible then 9 / 10 you get the conversion and the website achieved its goal.

In order to achieve these 2 simple things, however, there are quite a few areas to consider. Most things are user specific too, which is why there is never a one size fits all approach with web design. Below are just a few key areas to think about:

TRUST
- Strong / consistent brand / theme
- Good, genuine reviews / testimonials
- Decent social presence and regular posts
- Proof of work - client logos, case studies, news
- Genuine content and imagery (not Ai)

USABILITY
- Clear call to actions
- Quick load times
- Easy navigation
- Any area of the site is 1 or 2 clicks away
- Minimal fields on forms and shops
- Clear text and use of titles and padding

What’s the BEST approach when looking for a new website? 🤔

There are several ways you can go about it…

1. Build your own - which will undoubtedly cost you more time and effort in the long run and be difficult to achieve what you want.

2. Use a large web agency - they will most likely charge through the roof or outsource the work to a junior or even abroad, and you’ll only ever talk to the receptionist or account manager.

3. Use an online package like Yell or Go Daddy - with an SEO package promising the world but leaving you with an awful templated site that does nothing.

4. Use a new Ai tool - this will end up being a very generic and often clunky site with little character and will be increasingly difficult to make subtle changes to.

5. Or you can even use your mate Dave from school who dabbles in a bit of website design on the weekends.

Being in the industry for 20 years I’ve seen it all and I can honestly say the best approach (and this applies to most service based professions) is finding an experienced and expert freelancer who will take the time to design your site correctly around your brand, your brief, and your target audience.

With my approach you deal with me directly and I won’t start any build until you’re 100% happy with the design - giving complete reassurance you will get a website to be proud of.
