🗺️ Bringing community knowledge to life through mapping!
From August 11–14, 2026, OutSourceRox conducted four days of practical QGIS training at the Annai ICT Centre, with representatives from 14 North Rupununi Wetlands communities.
The training formed part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Amazon Sustainable Landscapes II Guyana Project, helping participants develop skills to create, update and manage their Community Resource Use Maps.
Through hands-on exercises, participants worked on mapping waterways, roads, trails, settlements and natural resources, incorporating GPS information and preparing maps for print and digital use.
Community members already hold valuable knowledge of their lands. These tools give them another way to document that knowledge and use it to support planning and natural resource management.
Thank you to the participants for their engagement and willingness to learn, and to the EPA and ASL II Guyana Project for supporting this initiative.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through the Amazon Sustainable Landscapes II (ASL II) Guyana Project, completed a four-day Community Resource Mapping and Digitization Training with community representatives, on August 11–14, 2026, at the Annai ICT Centre in Region 9. Participants included representatives from 14 North Rupununi Wetlands communities.
The training focused on strengthening community capacity to digitize, update and manage Community Resource Use Maps using QGIS and GPS-based spatial information, while building practical skills to support community-level planning and natural resource management. This is part of the Project’s broader efforts to support local capacity and decision-making.
Through interactive sessions and hands-on exercises, participants were introduced to the foundations of GIS, QGIS and community resource mapping, including digitization of community resources and gained practical experience working with spatial data to produce and update community.
