Google Successfully Runs AI on a Satellite in Space!
Google has achieved a major milestone in Project Suncatcher, an ambitious research initiative exploring the possibility of building AI data centers in space using solar-powered satellites equipped with advanced computing chips.
The project aims to create interconnected satellite systems that can process AI workloads directly in orbit, potentially reducing the need for traditional Earth-based data centers.
As part of this initiative, Google successfully received its first AI-generated response from a prototype satellite equipped with Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). The satellite ran Gemma 4, Google's open AI model, and generated a response to a prompt sent from Earth.
The next steps include testing how AI chips perform under extreme temperatures and radiation in space, evaluating the reliability of AI processing in orbit, and working toward connecting two satellites for further experiments in 2027.
