CAN DIFFERENT CCTV BRANDS WORK TOGETHER?

“Can I connect a Brand A camera to my Brand B recorder?” 🤔

Often, yes—but getting a picture doesn’t mean every feature will work!

🌐 MEET ONVIF: A COMMON LANGUAGE
ONVIF provides standardised ways for compatible IP cameras, NVRs and video-management software to communicate.

It can make upgrading easier, allowing you to retain compatible cameras when changing your recorder.

💡 ONVIF applies to network-based equipment. Analogue cameras still need compatible formats such as HD-TVI, HDCVI or AHD.

🧩 WHAT IS AN ONVIF “PROFILE”?
A profile defines a set of functions that products support.

Think of it as checking whether both devices speak the same language and understand the functions you need. Check matching profiles on both the camera and recorder—not just an “ONVIF supported” label.

🎥 VIDEO WORKING? NOW CHECK THE FEATURES!
Depending on the devices and their integration, you may be able to view and record video—but still need to verify:

🎤 Audio recording and two-way talk
🎮 PTZ movement and zoom control
🚶 Motion events and human/vehicle alerts
🧠 AI metadata and smart search
💡 Siren and warning-light control

Example: A camera may detect a person, but the recorder might only save the video without receiving that person-detection event.

🔍 CHECK THESE BEFORE BUYING
✅ Exact camera and recorder model numbers
✅ Official ONVIF listing and matching firmware version
✅ Shared ONVIF profiles and required features
✅ Supported resolution, compression and bandwidth
✅ A practical test of live view, recording, playback and alerts

⚡ BONUS TIP: PoE supplies power and data connectivity. A camera powering on does not prove that its video and smart features are compatible!

📌 AAC TIP: Tell your supplier which functions you need—not simply, “Can connect or not?” 😉

📩 Message AAC Distribution with your camera and recorder model numbers for help checking compatibility.

𝗗𝗢𝗘𝗦 𝗔 𝟯𝟬𝟬𝟬𝗩𝗔 𝗨𝗣𝗦 𝗠𝗘𝗔𝗡 𝟯𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗧𝗦?

❌ Not necessarily!

One of the most common mistakes when selecting a UPS is looking at the 𝗩𝗔 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 without checking the actual output power and backup duration.

Before recommending a UPS, always check:

⚡ 𝗩𝗔 (𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘁-𝗔𝗺𝗽𝘀) — The apparent power capacity.
🔌 𝗪 (𝗪𝗮𝘁𝘁𝘀) — The actual output power limit.
⏱️ 𝗥𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 — How long the UPS can support the connected equipment at the expected load.

For example, two UPS models rated at 3000VA may have different watt capacities and battery runtimes.

💡 Pro Tip: Always calculate the equipment load and confirm the manufacturer's runtime data before committing to a backup duration.

☀️ BRIGHT DOORWAY… BUT WHY IS THE PERSON SO DARK?

Your CCTV shows the street clearly, but the customer entering your shop looks like a silhouette. 🕴️

This often happens when the bright background overwhelms the darker subject. WDR, DWDR, BLC and HLC handle difficult lighting in different ways. Here’s the simple guide! 👇

🌗 WDR — WIDE DYNAMIC RANGE
Helps preserve detail in bright and dark areas together. Many cameras achieve this by combining different exposures.

✅ Useful for shop entrances, glass-front offices and loading bays.
💡 Helps you see the person inside while retaining details outside.

🖥️ DWDR — DIGITAL WIDE DYNAMIC RANGE
Uses software processing to brighten shadows and adjust contrast.

✅ Can help with moderate differences in brightness.
⚠️ It cannot recover detail that was never captured, such as a completely washed-out background. Performance can differ considerably from multi-exposure WDR.

👤 BLC — BACKLIGHT COMPENSATION
Adjusts exposure to brighten a subject standing against a bright background.

✅ Useful when the person is your priority.
⚠️ The outside view may become too bright and lose detail.

🚘 HLC — HIGHLIGHT COMPENSATION
Suppresses very bright areas, such as headlights, to improve visibility around them.

✅ Useful in scenes with strong, concentrated lights.
⚠️ HLC alone does not guarantee readable number plates—camera selection, angle and exposure still matter!

🧠 EASY WAY TO REMEMBER:

🌗 WDR: Balance bright and dark areas.
🖥️ DWDR: Adjust the image digitally.
👤 BLC: Brighten the backlit subject.
🚘 HLC: Suppress strong highlights.

📌 AAC TIP: Test your entrance camera during bright daylight with someone walking through the doorway. Check both facial detail and motion blur—not just how nice the empty scene looks!

📩 Message AAC Distribution for help choosing a camera for challenging lighting.

☀️📶 NO WI-FI? NO NEARBY POWER POINT? YOUR SITE STILL NEEDS SECURITY!

Watch over your farm, construction site or remote entrance with the Hikvision 4MP + 4MP Solar 4G Dual-Lens PT Camera.

📌 DS-2CFSP8-D/4G(2.8+4mm)(MY-SIM)

👀 TWO LENSES. A BIGGER PICTURE.
A 2.8mm fixed lens keeps the wider scene in view, while a separate 4mm pan-and-tilt lens lets you look around. Both deliver 4MP resolution.

☀️ SOLAR POWER FOR HARD-TO-WIRE LOCATIONS
An 8W solar panel + 9,000mAh rechargeable battery support installation where mains power is inconvenient.

📶 4G CONNECTIVITY — NO WI-FI NEEDED
View your site through Hik-Connect using 4G LTE. This MY-SIM version comes with a built-in SIM card.

Uses low-frame-rate recording during quiet periods and switches to higher-frame-rate video when an event is detected, helping conserve power and storage.

🎯 DETECT PEOPLE & VEHICLES. TRACK PEOPLE.
Motion Detection 2.0 distinguishes people and vehicles, while the PT camera supports automatic person tracking.

🌙 SEE AFTER DARK
Smart Hybrid Light provides infrared and white-light illumination up to 30 metres.

🗣️ SPEAK THROUGH THE CAMERA
Built-in microphone and speaker let you communicate with visitors or workers remotely.

💾 KEEP RECORDINGS ON SITE
Supports a microSD card up to 512GB.

🌴 Great for: farms, orchards, temporary construction sites, outdoor storage areas and remote gates.

📩 Message AAC Distribution for product details and dealer enquiries.

Solar operation depends on sunlight, installation and usage. Remote access requires suitable 4G coverage and an active data plan. Local recording requires a memory card.

𝗖𝗔𝗧𝟲 𝗩𝗦 𝗖𝗔𝗧𝟲𝗔 — 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗨𝗣𝗚𝗥𝗔𝗗𝗘 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗟𝗟𝗬 𝗪𝗢𝗥𝗧𝗛 𝗜𝗧?

Planning a new network installation? Don't choose your cable based on price alone!

Both Cat6 and Cat6A support Gigabit Ethernet, but the difference becomes important when planning for 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝟭𝟬𝗚𝗯𝗽𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆.

🔹 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝟲
• 250 MHz cabling performance
• 10Gbps possible over shorter, suitable links
• Practical for many standard office networks

🔹 𝗖𝗮𝘁𝟲𝗔
• 500 MHz cabling performance
• Supports 10GBASE-T up to 100 metres
• Ideal for new 10G-ready infrastructure

💡 Pro Tip: For 10G on existing Cat6, distance, installation quality and alien crosstalk matter. Test the link rather than assuming it will perform.

📦 DVR, NVR OR XVR — WHICH RECORDER DOES WHAT?

Buying a CCTV recorder? Don’t choose by “8-channel” or “4K” alone! 👀

First, check what type of cameras you’re connecting. Here’s the simple guide 👇

🔌 DVR — DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER
Typically used with analogue cameras connected through coaxial cable and BNC connectors. The recorder processes and stores their video.

✅ Common in existing coaxial CCTV installations.
💡 Analogue HD can deliver high-resolution video too! Check compatibility with formats such as HD-TVI, HDCVI or AHD.

🌐 NVR — NETWORK VIDEO RECORDER
Works with IP cameras that process and encode video before sending it over a network to the recorder.

✅ Common in network-based CCTV systems.
💡 An NVR with built-in PoE ports can power compatible cameras and receive their video through the same Ethernet cable. Other NVRs use separate network switches.

🔄 XVR — MULTI-FORMAT RECORDER
A term commonly used for recorders supporting several analogue video formats, often with additional IP-camera support.

✅ Useful when retaining existing coaxial cameras while upgrading selected areas.
⚠️ “Multi-format” doesn’t mean every camera will work! Supported formats, resolutions and IP-channel limits vary by model.

🔢 WHAT DOES “8-CHANNEL” MEAN?
It generally means the recorder supports up to eight camera inputs in the specified configuration.

But check these details too:
📷 Maximum resolution supported per camera
🚦 Total incoming video bandwidth
▶️ Simultaneous viewing and playback capability
🔌 Number of built-in PoE ports

An 8-channel NVR may have fewer than eight PoE ports—or none at all!

🛒 Before buying, check:
“What cameras do I have, how are they connected, and how many will I need later?”

📩 Send your camera model numbers to AAC Distribution for help checking recorder compatibility.

🔌 18 AWG vs 24 AWG — WHICH IS THICKER?
If you picked 24 AWG… this post is for you! 😉

Welcome to AAC Cable Academy — Part 1: Cable Size Explained.

📏 AWG: SMALLER NUMBER = THICKER CONDUCTOR
AWG stands for American Wire Gauge.

From thicker to thinner:
18 AWG → 20 AWG → 22 AWG → 24 AWG

For the same conductor material and length, a thicker conductor has lower electrical resistance—helping reduce voltage drop when carrying power.

🔍 AWG, mm² AND mm — WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

✅ AWG = conductor size expressed as a gauge number.
✅ mm² = conductor cross-sectional area. A bigger number means more conductor area.
✅ Overall diameter (mm) = the thickness of the complete cable, including insulation, shielding and outer jacket.

⚠️ A THICKER-LOOKING CABLE MAY NOT HAVE MORE COPPER!
A thick jacket can make a cable look substantial while hiding a small conductor inside. Check the specification—not just the appearance.

🛠️ WHY DOES THIS MATTER?
For CCTV power wiring, conductor size affects voltage drop along the cable. But for video and network signals, material, shielding and electrical performance matter too.

💡 Remember: Lower AWG = thicker conductor. Thicker cable ≠ automatically better performance.

📌 Save this guide for your next cable purchase!
💬 Before reading this, would you have picked 18 AWG or 24 AWG?

Next: Copper colour doesn’t always mean solid copper!
