On Saturday, 24 October, All For Tech, through our Digital Protection Community, hosted Global Encryption Day 2026, “Encryption for Everyone: Privacy, Safety, and Trust Online”, at the eHealth Africa auditorium in Kano.
We brought government, the technical community, businesses, academia, civil society, people with special needs, and students into one room for a single question: how does strong encryption protect every one of us online?
A few of the moments that mattered:
→ Two multi-stakeholder panels, “The Backbone of Trust” and “No One Left Behind”, explored your rights under Nigeria’s Data Protection Regulation, why health and laboratory data is among the most sensitive data you have, and why digital inclusion is a right, not an afterthought, for people with special needs.
→ A students’ debate across three schools on whether governments should be able to read encrypted messages, a reminder that young people are ready to lead this conversation.
→ Hands-on sessions where participants secured their own phones, and a first-ever public demo of a locally built, encrypted smart-agriculture device.
→ Delivered in English and Hausa, with sign language interpretation throughout, because safety that leaves people behind isn’t safety.
One message ran through the whole day: your most sensitive self, your health, your identity, your access to information, is only as safe as the protection around your data.
