No Isolation

No Isolation We bring people together through warm technology. No Isolation is a Norwegian startup, founded in October 2015.

The company works towards putting an end to loneliness and involuntary social isolation by shining light on the problem, as well as building tailored communication tools for people living in vulnerable situations. Their first tool is AV1, a robot created to help children and young adults with long-term illness participate in their everyday life. AV1 was launched in August 2016 and is currently hel

ping more than 200 children and young adults in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, United Kingdom, Romania and the Netherlands. The next tool, Komp, is designed to improve the communication between generations and family members, regardless of technological skills. No Isolation has about 50 employees, and offices in Oslo, Amsterdam and London.

Okinawa is bringing people together through small groups of lifelong friends! On the Japanese island of Okinawa, there is an extraordinarily high number of centenarians. One of the reasons is "moai" - groups of lifelong friends. Traditionally, groups of five children are brought together, who promise to support each other for life. The "Moai" meet several times a week throughout a lifetime.

Elders in Okinawa, Japan, one of the original “Blue Zones” longevity hotspots, live extraordinarily better and longer lives than almost anyone else in the world.

Many of our grandparents and relatives over the age of 70 are being hit hard by the lockdown - unable to leave their homes they are vulnerable and feel isolated. As a result, younger family members are stepping up to help them - and building stronger connections in the process. ‘A simple photo sent to a family chat can make someone’s day and a video call between grandparent and grandchild can help both parties to feel less alone. Memories don’t have to be built in person – simply being connected is what matters.’ says Karen, No Isolation CEO to Metro.

Elderly people say they have felt 'more loved' since self-isolation began.

Seren is using her AV1, "David", to keep in touch with friends and family now that school's closed. She is in long-term medical isolation due to cancer treatment, and will most likely not be able to return to school until May 2021. Thanks to SpecialEffect's BubbleBuster project, she gets to stay connected. Read her story:

27 Mar 2020 Busting out of school and keeping in touch Until very recently six year-old Seren, who's having cancer treatment and as a result is already in long-term medical isolation because of her immune deficiency, was ‘back at school’ in a brilliantly virtual way thanks to her home-controlled...

Feeling stressed and anxious? We do. Isolation does that. Some advice: Call each other at meal time. Eating with someone increases your appetite. Have a chat through the window or from your balcony. Help those who cannot leave their house, buy them medicine and groceries, help with gardening or walk their dog. Community, neighbours and compassion is more important now than ever. We are all 💕

Most of us are now self-isolating and we get our daily contact through social media and technology. It's important to remember those among us who are not on any digital channel, and pick up the phone.

More relevant than ever, check out co-founder Karen Dolva's blog entry in HuffPost UK from last year on how we need to remember this group when developing tech.

I'm sure you fire off emails, WhatsApp messages, Instagram comments and expect instant responses – our parents’ generation isn’t used to this.
