Where does China get its oil? In 2026, the answer depends on the channel.
By recorded crude value, Kazakhstan leads by a huge margin, but that is because its oil arrives by pipeline, a corridor that also carries Russian transit crude, rather than because Kazakhstan out-produces everyone. Angola and a rising United States follow.
On the seaborne side, the picture flipped: China's crude imports fell to 8.1 million barrels per day in Q2 2026, down 32%, after Strait of Hormuz disruption cut Gulf flows. Deep reserves let China wait for cheaper barrels before buying again in July.
