A software prototype is like a floor plan. It helps you see what’s taking shape, test ideas, and make changes while they’re still inexpensive. Catching issues during the prototype design phase is much cheaper than fixing them after development, and creates tools employees actually want to use.

But just like a floor plan isn’t a house, a prototype isn’t the final product. You still need the craftsmanship, materials, and systems that make the completed product deliver value every day.

Wireframes still have their place, but how we use them is shifting.

With tools like Figma and stronger design systems, it’s often faster to start with high-fidelity mockups in the same environment where the final product is built. For projects with lots of unknowns, though, wireframes remain a great way to get everyone on the same page and adjust before investing too much.
