πŸŽ‰ We're proud to welcome Natalie Steele to the BES team!

Natalie joins us as an Intelligence Analyst after earning her master's degree at The George Washington University.

She brings experience across intelligence analysis, behavioral threat assessment, and private-sector security, which is a combination that maps directly onto the work we do for our federal clients.

Outside the office, Natalie loves trying new restaurants in the D.C. area, taking day trips out of the city, and watching Oregon football, her hometown team.

Welcome to BES, Natalie! We're glad to have you!

Esri's Web AppBuilder retirement is coming in 2027, but the key date is Q4 2026.

That's when editing ends, and existing apps freeze. If your agency runs the Threat Analysis or Emergency Response Guide widgets, whatever state those apps are in that day is the state they stay in until they stop working entirely.

The migration itself isn't the hard part. Esri is building parity features into Experience Builder. The hard part is operational: the procedures that name the old tool, the training responders need on the new one, and knowing which app is authoritative during the transition.

Our Director of Technical Services, Jamie Jacobs, wrote up the actual timeline, the difference between the ArcGIS Online and Enterprise clocks, and the three things worth doing before the freeze:

πŸŽ‰ We're proud to welcome Campbell Holder to the BES team!

Camp joins us as an OSINT Analyst after finishing his political science degree at the University of Mississippi.

During his studies, Camp interned at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Mississippi and the National Geospatial Agency on the Tearline Project. These experiences gave him the skills and expertise to excel in his new role at BES.

Outside the office, Camp is an outdoorsman and a traveler, so ask him where he is headed next and plan to have a few minutes.

Welcome to BES, Camp!

πŸŽ‰ Join us in welcoming Ivy Bopp to the team!

Ivy studied Criminology at Mississippi State University, where the work is about patterns in behavior: what people do, under what conditions, and what makes those conditions more likely.

She finished her master's in Applied Intelligence at Georgetown University in May, layering tradecraft on top. Structured analysis. Source evaluation. Writing that a decision-maker can act on without a second briefing.

That pairing shows up constantly in the work we do. Understanding the behavior behind a threat matters as much as collecting information about it.

Outside the office, she runs. Her second half marathon is in September, and a full marathon is on the calendar for 2027. She also gets through close to a movie a day, with Seven at the top of the list. If you need a recommendation, she has one ready.

We're glad to have you here, Ivy!

πŸŽ‰ We're excited to welcome Lindsay Toothaker back to our OSINT team after her internship last summer.

She returns to BES after earning her degree in Intelligence Analysis and Geography from James Madison University. This year, she is sharpening her OSINT analysis and writing, and digging into how GIS threads through the rest of our work.

Outside the office, you can find her on a trail or a paddleboard, and she has two service projects with the National Park Service behind her.

We are glad to have you back, Lindsay!

Hawaii is 2,500 miles from the nearest mainland grid.

That can cause serious problems, and we're watching it play out now.

This is our Power Outage Dashboard this morning during Lala, built on real-time, hyper-local grid intelligence from the nation's largest electrical safety network.

What the view shows beyond the outage footprint:

πŸ₯ 8 hospitals inside impacted areas
πŸš’ 30 fire stations
πŸ“ž 19 cellular towers
🏫 78 schools

That last set is the part that changes decisions. Outage data tells you where the lights are off. Hyper-local outage geography with critical facility overlays tells you what stops working and when.

Mutual aid crews are flying in from Western states this week. Our thoughts are with the communities impacted by Lala.

The derecho hit Tuesday. The flooding came Wednesday. The grid is still catching up this morning.

Our dashboard is tracking 642 active outages across Indiana, Ohio, and Illinois, with an estimated 1.9 million people in the affected areas.

Inside those outage footprints: 14 hospitals, 5 ambulance facilities, 87 fire stations, 27 cellular towers, and 211 schools.

This is what a compounding event looks like. Restoration crews are chasing Tuesday's wind damage while Wednesday's flash flooding cut off the roads they need.

A single outage number can't capture the details. What matters operationally is which outages sit on top of which facilities, which are shrinking, and which just appeared.

That's the picture Ting Insights' real-time outage data puts in ArcGIS: street-level polygons, refreshed in real time, overlaid on the critical infrastructure your team already tracks.

If your EOC is working this event and could use this view, message us.

At the National Homeland Security Conference, the conversation at our booth keeps coming back to data. Agencies are not short on technology, but they are short on systems that talk to each other.

That's where wasted potential lives. Connecting your technology, data, workflows, and personnel revolutionizes your decision-making environment, without the need to rip and replace systems or overhaul anything.

Jeff Sopel and Doug Eades of Kentucky Emergency Management walked a room through what that looks like in practice with Esri and Microsoft Tools: one environment, shared data, shared roles, shared map, used every day and not just during activations.

Find us at booth 321, right beside our close partner Esri. Come tell us what is not connecting in your operation.

The Inc. 5000 measures three-year revenue growth.

Which means a fifth straight appearance is harder than a first. Each year the bar moves, because the company is being measured against its own larger base.

We're proud to share that Bent Ear Solutions has been named to Inc. Magazine's 2026 list of the 5000 fastest-growing private companies in America.

Only a small share of companies that reach the list return to it five years in a row.

Chris McIntosh, CEO and Co-Founder of BES, writes:

"Awards don’t build great companies. Great people do. Thanks to all of our amazing employees for your dedication, your passion, and your commitment to excellence. Being named to the Inc. 5000 for five consecutive years reflects what we have accomplished together. And thank you to our clients for trusting us to help you solve some of your most challenging problems."

Thank you to every client who brought us a hard problem, letting us solve it with you, and to every team member who consistently delivers.

Every crisis and emergency management organization operates with a red slice.

It is that share of situational awareness devoted to what the organization does not know it does not know, or "unknown unknowns".

Often small in percentage, but that is where most operational failures start.

In Shrinking the Red Slice, Jim Featherstone looks at why that gap exists and what actually closes it.

The article covers:
βœ… Why crisis management defaults to Law Enforcement and Fire, and what that default costs
βœ… How FEMA's Community Lifelines framework maps the partners missing from most planning tables
βœ… Why grocery and distribution operators belong in pre-disaster planning
βœ… The two mechanisms that shrink the red slice on purpose: red teaming and inclusive collaboration

Jim spent more than 30 years in public safety and emergency management, including six years as General Manager of the Los Angeles Emergency Management Department. Ground Truth is his five-part series on the structural problems the field keeps working around.

Worth reading before your next exercise design.
