Access to transportation continues to be a major contributor to the likelihood that someone will vote. A study on the correlation between car ownership and voter turnout found that 36% of those who did not have a car voted and 66% of those with a car voted. Reaching a polling place becomes more critical as the current administration attempts to create more restrictions on mail-in ballots.

Last week, Taylor from Civitech attended the 2026 Southern Regional Leadership Summit, hosted by the DNC Black Caucus!

Elected officials, candidates, and community organizers from across the region joined together in Houston, TX for two days focused on leadership, voter protection, political engagement, training, and building Black political power.

Thank you to the DNC Black Caucus for hosting, and to Taylor for representing Civitech.

US Census data illustrates that the Hispanic and Latino communities make up roughly 20% of the total US population and are expanding rapidly. Despite an increase in suppressive efforts and racism targeting these communities, this expanding electorate continues to be an active and influential bloc of participants in US democracy.

Engaging in the democratic process remains one of our most powerful tools to combat suppression. As the fight continues, this Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month (Sep. 15 - Oct. 15) reminds us of the critical need to stay involved in defending every voice in our nation.
