With Mother’s Day coming up, it got me thinking about how many of our favorite memories are tied to our moms.

- Videos from birthdays and holidays she made sure were recorded.
- The stories she tells from when you were growing up, like they happened yesterday.
- Old family photos she kept safe that you may not have seen in years.
- And all the little moments you didn’t realize would mean so much one day.

Some of the most meaningful projects we’ve worked on have involved helping families preserve those kinds of memories so that they can be revisited, shared with the family, and passed down for generations.

So, if you’re looking for a thoughtful Mother’s Day gift, giving your mom the chance to relive and share those memories might mean more than anything you can wrap. Because protecting those memories is the kind of gift that she’ll enjoy for years.

What’s one memory with your mom that instantly makes you smile?

Yesterday was the tax deadline.
Today is sunny and beautiful, which feels like pretty good timing.

For a lot of people, tax season can be stressful, expensive, and mentally draining. Whether you were gathering paperwork for weeks, writing a check you didn’t want to write, or simply glad it’s behind you, I hope today feels like a breath of fresh air.

It’s also the time of year when many businesses and families start to notice how much paper has piled up, how much of it they no longer need, and how much space it’s taking up.

If you’ve got old tax paperwork, files, banker boxes, sensitive documents, or filing cabinets you no longer need, now can be a great time to clear some space and start fresh.

We help businesses and families across the KC Metro securely shred, scan, and organize what matters most.

In the meantime, I hope you get a chance to step outside, enjoy the sunshine, and feel like tax season is officially in the rearview mirror.

What’s one thing you like to do after finally getting a stressful task behind you?

A little over a month ago, we decided to invest in some Camp Snap cameras to be more intentional with capturing moments and memories. Looking back at all the pictures we’ve taken at various events since getting them has been so much fun. Are there any old photos that instantly bring back memories for you?

Here are some of our favorites from various events!

Some memories deserve more than just storage.

This was a recent legacy project we completed for a family. It started as boxes of photos that were important, but tucked away, rarely seen, and often forgotten. The kind of memories that belong at the center of family life, not in a closet.

Here’s what we delivered:
– Carefully organized physical photos
– Digitized memories, ready to access and share
– Wooden USBs designed to be kept, not tossed in a drawer and forgotten
– An Aura frame, preloaded for their mother so she could enjoy these memories immediately, without any extra effort
– And a fully organized, tailored Google Drive with the entire project uploaded, ready to be shared with the whole family. A living archive designed to grow over time.

Every decision was made intentionally, to honor the memories and make them effortless to enjoy. Not every family chooses to do this, but for the families who do, it becomes a living archive, part of everyday life, a treasure their grandkids’ grandkids will be able to experience and add to for generations.

Because preserving a family’s history shouldn’t end with a folder of files.
It should feel complete.
It should feel thoughtful.
And it should be ready to be experienced again by everyone it matters to.

A few weeks ago, Ariana finished reading Unreasonable Hospitality. She ended up loving it so much that I figured I should read it too.

However, I did not expect this book to have such a dramatic impact on the way we think about serving others.

While I haven’t finished reading it, the concepts and stories shared in the book have been a joy to read. Now, as we approach our projects and clients, we’ve been asking ourselves what are some ways, either big or small, that we could really improve the overall experience. We have loved brainstorming ways that we could be more unreasonable!

Here’s what we’ve done so far:
- We bought and preloaded an Aura frame with the photos we digitized for a client’s mom so she could enjoy the memories, too.

- A client recently sent us some digital pictures from their vacation, so we had them printed and framed.

- We started delivering our digitized files on nice wooden USBs to make the experience feel more intentional, rather than another generic USB that would get lost in a desk.

It’s been so fun and fulfilling to think of creative new ways that we can bring even a little unreasonable hospitality to KC.

I absolutely can’t wait to finish reading it, and for those who haven’t read it yet, I can’t recommend it enough. If you have had the chance to read it, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the book and ways that your team has started implementing unreasonable hospitality!

One of the most rewarding parts of running DocuLock has been getting to serve people who are actively serving our community.

Recently, we were fortunate enough to receive a shoutout from one of our favorite local Kansas City podcasts that we’ve come to really respect, named Enterrupt KC.

Their motto is “𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺, 𝘕𝘖𝘛 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘺,” and they truly live that out by highlighting voices from all across the KC Metro and creating space for meaningful conversations.

What makes this even more special for us is how our relationship originally started.

Back in 2024, Ariana and I reached out to JL and D.Rod because we were curious about what it takes to start and grow a podcast. They were kind enough to meet us for coffee, answer all of our questions, and share thoughtful and helpful advice.

Since then, we've had the pleasure of staying in touch and seeing them at various events where they've always been nothing but supportive, encouraging, and kind.

Recently, we had the opportunity to return the favor in our own way by helping digitize some of JL’s family’s VHS tapes and memories. Hearing him talk about that experience in their latest episode meant so much to us.

If you’re looking for a podcast that focuses on real conversations and great people in the Kansas City community, this is one I can’t recommend enough, and luckily, you can find them wherever you already listen to podcasts!

One thing Ariana and I talk about often is how we approach the memories families trust us with.

To us, they’re not just “projects.”

They’re someone’s childhood birthday parties, someone’s grandparents, family vacations, holiday parties, and weddings.

When we’re digitizing a stack of VHS tapes or scanning old photos, we treat them with the same care and respect that we treat our own family’s memories.

Because the truth is, these moments can’t be recreated. Once they’re gone, they’re gone.

That’s why we take the responsibility of preserving them so seriously.

If your family has old VHS tapes, photo albums, or slides sitting in a closet somewhere, I’d like to ask

Is there a memory that you’d hate to lose if one of your old VHS tapes stopped working or a photo started to fade?

Ariana and I had the pleasure of attending the Small Business Superstar Showcase at Union Station last night, which is a fantastic gathering of local entrepreneurs, vendors, and community members celebrating the spirit of small business in Kansas City! From lively booths to engaging conversations and exciting giveaways, the energy in the room was alive and inspiring.

We want to give a huge thank you to everyone who stopped by our table to chat, share stories, and sign up for our giveaway.

While there were many highlights, our favorite part was connecting with people one-on-one, hearing the memories that matter most to them, and learning about the stories behind those moments. A few people were even kind enough to pull out their phones and show me photos while sharing the stories behind them. Each of those conversations was a powerful reminder of why we do what we do and of how many incredible stories actually exist in our community.

We’re extremely grateful to be part of such a supportive small business community here in the Kansas City area, and we’re already looking forward to the next opportunity to connect.

To everyone who stopped by our table last night, thank you. It was truly a pleasure getting to meet you.

If you didn’t get the chance to attend last night, we’d still love to hear about your favorite memory or story! What’s one memory you want to preserve?

Last weekend, we threw a surprise watch party for my family!

About a month ago, Ariana and I were having dinner with my grandma when she casually mentioned she still had six old VHS tapes.

Six!

I was immediately thrilled and honestly a little shocked that I didn’t know she had any in the first place. She let me take them home, and over the next few weeks, in between client projects, I digitized every one.

This past Sunday at our regular family dinner, Ariana and I secretly connected our laptop to the TV and hit play. What happened next was better than anything I could have expected or planned.

Everyone leaned in.

People started laughing.

Stories started flying.

Phones came out to record the screen.

My nieces and nephews kept asking where I was in all the videos, and my dad had to explain they were filmed “BS” or Before Spencer.

We got to see family members I never had the chance to meet. We heard voices that hadn’t been heard in years.

I’ve heard clients describe moments like this before, but experiencing it with my own family was something else entirely.

Having this experience with my family and seeing how much joy it brought all of them has made us all the more excited to be able to give that same gift to families all over the KC metro.

So, if you or an older family member has any old VHS tapes, slides, or photo albums, we’d love to preserve those memories so that your family can throw a watch party too!

This week, I want to share just a few messages from families we’ve served that completely made our day and remind us why we work so hard to protect memories across the KC Metro:

- “I am having a blast watching some of them, especially the ones from the 80s! My Nana is thrilled and thinks this is the greatest thing ever.”

- “THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!”

- “My grandma has been utterly thrilled to watch the last batch of videos and can’t wait to share the stories behind them.”

- “Oh my goodness, my heart is sooo full!”

Hearing reactions like these is exactly why we’re so passionate about preserving memories for families across the KC Metro.

Old pictures fade. VHS tapes deteriorate. Stories get lost. But when those moments are digitized, they become something families can revisit, share, and pass down for generations.

If you have boxes of tapes, photos, or documents tucked away somewhere, this is your reminder that those memories are worth protecting.

If you’ve ever digitized old family media or want to, I’d love to hear what you found!
