This one’s for our student community 💚

So many of you have told us you want to be more involved with Consensus, and we’ve loved seeing how you bring it into your classes and study groups. Today we’re launching the Consensus Student Fellowship 🎓

It’s a space for students who love good research to connect with each other, learn alongside our team, and bring Consensus to their campus in their own way. You’ll grow your skills and your résumé, but more than anything you’ll be part of a community that’s shaping how students do research.

We can’t wait to meet you. Apply through the link in our bio ✨

How should we teach source-based writing in the age of GenAI?

Next Tuesday, join Karyn Kessler, Paul Michiels, and Paul M. Rogers, authors of Crafting Ethical Scholarship, for a free live conversation about how expert scholars write with sources to develop ideas and generate new knowledge.

During this one-hour webinar, they’ll share:

• What their research reveals about expert source-based writing
• Two practical teaching applications for faculty using Consensus
• Ways to strengthen students’ metacognitive awareness, intellectual agency, and responsibility

The session will conclude with a live Q&A.

📚 New in Consensus: Shared Collections

Working on a group project? Now your whole group can search, save, and organize the literature in one shared place.

Instead of everyone searching separately, finding the same papers, and dropping links into a group chat or Google Doc, create a Collection and invite your lab, classmates, or study partner.

🔎 Search and save papers together
📄 Add PDFs, DOIs, or an existing Zotero library
💬 Save Threads and Artifacts alongside your papers
🤖 Ask questions across everything your group has collected
📚 Keep citations organized and ready to use

Everything your group finds becomes part of one shared library you can explore together.

Less duplicate searching. More time actually working together.

🔀 Some things are easier to understand when you can see the connections.

When the research you’re reading describes a process, mechanism, pathway, or theoretical model, ask Consensus to turn it into a flowchart.

Select the papers you want to explore, then try:

💬 “Create a flowchart showing how the concepts in these papers are connected.”

Consensus can map the relationships, stages, branches, and sequences described across your sources, giving you a visual way to understand how the pieces fit together.

🧬 Trace biological mechanisms
🩺 Map clinical pathways
🔬 Break down research procedures
🧠 Visualize theoretical models
🔀 Make sense of complex, multi-step processes

Instead of going back and forth between papers trying to hold every connection in your head, you can start with a visual model, then return to the underlying research to investigate each part more closely.

📊 New: Find potential research gaps, inspect the evidence behind them, and investigate what to study next with the updated Research Gaps Matrix.

Ask Consensus to create a Research Gaps Matrix from a Collection, selected papers, or a search across the full research corpus. It organizes the relevant literature into a grid, showing which populations, outcomes, methods, or settings have been studied often, rarely, or not yet surfaced in your results.

Click any cell to see the papers behind it and the exact quotes supporting their placement. When you find a potential gap, launch a Deep Search directly from that cell to investigate whether it holds across the broader literature.

🔍 Use it to turn “what is missing from my current evidence?” into a concrete question to search for, test, or study next.

Our guide, Turn your Reference List into a Thinking Partner, shows you how to organize your papers, analyze evidence across them, and use visualizations to find patterns, gaps, and connections.

🕰️ Find the papers that established a field, the studies that changed its direction, and the most recent developments.

Ask Consensus to create a Results Timeline from one of your Collections, selected papers, or a search across the full research corpus. It places the relevant research in chronological order so you can see how evidence on a topic has evolved. The bigger the circle ➡️ the more citations.

For example: “Show how scientific understanding of this question has changed over time.”

📚 Use it to identify foundational studies, turning points, and recent developments before you start writing.

Our guide, Turn your Reference List into a Thinking Partner, shows you how to organize your papers, analyze evidence across them, and use visualizations like Results Timeline, Research Gaps Matrix, Citation Graph, and flowcharts to find patterns, gaps, and connections.

“It takes you right through all the jargon to the crux of the thing that you want to know.”

Dr. Barbara Han explains how Consensus helps her lab tackle one of the hardest parts of scientific research: navigating unfamiliar fields and integrating evidence across disciplines. 🔎

By surfacing vetted, credible papers and making every answer traceable to its source, Consensus helps researchers get oriented faster and focus on the connections that matter. 📚

What happens when the exact paper you need does not exist?

For Dr. Barbara Han, that is often where the real research begins.

Her lab may start with a question like, “How does Ebola interact with soil?” and find no direct answer. So the next step is to search outward, into nearby fields, asking how viruses persist in soil, which zoonotic viruses have been studied, and what evidence might help build the missing bridge.

In this clip, Dr. Han explains how Consensus helps her move into unfamiliar areas of research, get past disciplinary jargon, and find the closest available evidence without losing trust in the sources.

As she puts it, that process is “exactly what scientists want.”
