Message to franchise leaders: focus on unit level economics, and let that drive decision making.

It's too easy to be complacent with poor performance, as long as no one is complaining (too loudly). But your best move for franchise development is creating successful franchisees, because those franchisees become your biggest spokespersons and the biggest source of revenue growth for the whole organization.

Holmes once asked Watson how many steps led up to 221B Baker Street. Watson had climbed them hundreds of times and couldn’t say. Holmes knew: seventeen.

“You see, but you do not observe.”

Your website can work the same way. You know where pricing lives, what “Solutions” means and that the phone number is in the footer. A first-time visitor doesn’t.

One thing to consider: ask someone who’s never seen your site to find your hours or request a quote. Watch where they hesitate, and don’t help.

Google, what have you done for me lately?

That 4.9 rating from 2021 is cute. Google wants to know what’s happened since.

Here’s what keeps you in the Map Pack:

Fresh reviews. Recent reviews carry more weight than old ones. A steady trickle beats one big burst.
Ask every customer. Make it a habit, not a campaign. Text the link right after the job’s done.
Reply to every review. Good or bad. Google notices, and so do the next 50 people reading them.

Your customers are reading your reviews. Make sure there’s something new to read.

Need a review system that runs itself? Let’s talk.

AI is largely shaping search, and its impact on advertising continues to grow. Less real estate on the SERP, and more opportunities for platforms like Gemini and Chat GPT to monetize AI searches looming on the horizon. These changes have huge impacts on small businesses, but there is also opportunity to evolve along with the platforms.
Our take: multi-channel strategy is more important than ever, and small businesses will need a no-stone-unturned mentality to dominate the market.

Every apple on the tree is worth something. The trick is knowing when it's the best time to pick.

Peak condition doesn't last long. Watch the tree. Catch the fruit that's ready now, before the window closes.

Timing is everything in lead nurturing too. Good marketing doesn't let anything go to waste.

And the apples that already fell still have a use. Turn them into c***r. Work the old leads that may still convert instead of writing them off.

Making the most of everything on the tree, ripe or fallen. That's the job.

Fall is a good excuse to reset. Not overhaul everything. Pick one thing.

Every franchisor I know has a list of ten marketing ideas they've been meaning to try. Lead scoring. A new ad channel. Better onboarding emails. A local reviews push.

Running all ten means zero get done. But everyone can try one thing.

Pick the one. Think it through. Set a real timeline, a real way to measure it, and give it the quarter it deserves.

One well-run idea beats ten scattered ones every time.

What's the one thing on your list this fall?

Schema markup is a term that gets thrown out a lot when it comes to AI optimization, but what it is, and what it means for your business, is a bit more elusive.

Schema markup tells search engines explicitly what page content represents, rather than leaving them to infer it from context.

Schema markup looks very different for different business types (think e-commerce vs service-based businesses). There is not a one-size-fits-all approach. Business information, reviews, FAQs, services, and site navigation can all be labeled in a standardized format that eliminates ambiguity.

In an AI-driven search environment, this matters more than ever. The content AI surfaces most readily is the content it can understand most clearly. Schema is the translation layer that makes that possible.

The best theoretical markering plan, and the plan a franchisee is willing or able to run this quarter, are not always sympatico. That's just the reality.

Here's the challenge: paint the picture of what's possible anyway.

Then look at what's actually in front of them: the budget they have, the team they can staff, the courage they've got for change this quarter.

Moving towards 'best' often takes lots of baby steps. But when leaders and coaches believe in the vision, those steps can come quicker.

The best case gives them something worth reaching for. The realistic case keeps that reach from turning into a free fall.

Calibrating expectations requires careful guidance and building a bridge of trust between where the franchisee is, and where they could be. One small step at a time.

AI optimization involves not only quality content, but providing the right structure for that content.

Hierarchy, prioritization of content, clear content paths, and thoughtful usability of content are all important.

The goal is content that is simultaneously readable to human visitors and interpretable by automated systems, and when done well, those are not competing objectives.

There's a stretch in every campaign where nothing much shows up yet.
The ad is running. The SEO is compounding. The phone hasn't caught up.

It's an easy phase for franchise leadership to skip past. Check ins center around moments when there's a win to celebrate, or a problem to fix. Not much happens in between.

But the quiet middle is exactly where franchisees start doubting the plan. Numbers aren't proving anything yet, and doubt fills that space fast if nobody's talking to them about it.

Explaining what's building while it's still invisible is the path to leading through the quiet middle.

The quiet middle is the place where trust is built, long before the wins make it onto the scorecard.
