"We have antivirus, so we're protected."
I hear this from business owners every week. And every week, it's wrong.

Antivirus catches files with known fingerprints. But almost nothing about modern attacks looks like a file:

→ Phishing emails that steal Microsoft 365 passwords (no file)
→ Fake invoices that trick bookkeepers into wiring money (no file)
→ Ransomware operators logging in with stolen credentials and using your own admin tools against you (no file)
→ Fileless malware running entirely in memory (literally no file to scan)

If your security stack stops at antivirus, you're using a screen door.

The recent Microsoft global outage, linked to CrowdStrike's security software, disrupted services worldwide on July 19, 2024. The issue, caused by a faulty software update, affected various sectors, grounding flights, impacting hospitals, and causing technical difficulties across numerous organizations. CrowdStrike confirmed that the problem stemmed from a defect in a software update, not a cyberattack.

Delta, American and United have resumed flights, although there are likely to be ongoing delays and cancellations due to an outage sparked by a faulty cybersecurity update.
