A study published in Sensors puts a number on something facilities teams already feel: poorly maintained building systems can waste 20 to 30 percent more energy than they should. Not from major failures, from small operational drift that never gets caught.

That drift is expensive precisely because it's invisible. A missed filter swap or an unlogged fault code doesn't show up until it's already a utility bill or a failed audit, by which point the cause is impossible to trace.

The researchers' conclusion lines up with what we see in the field: the bottleneck isn't the maintenance work, it's whether the data behind it is real-time, accurate, and reaches the right people.

Compliance in rail is rarely the issue, proving it is.

Our customers tell us the same thing again and again: the work gets done, but tracking what was done, when, and where becomes the real headache.

Earlier this month at the CSLRA 2026 Annual Conference, G Satish tackled this head-on in a session called “Built In, Not Bolted On.”
