Mountains are more than landmarks. They hold histories: geological, ecological, cultural, and political.

In “Six Peaks Speak: Unsettling Legacies in Southern Dja Dja Wurrung Country”, Barry Golding, with Clive Willman, traces the stories of six iconic peaks in Central Victoria, Australia. Bringing together First Nations knowledge, historical archives, geology, ecology, and community experience, the book asks how these mountains—and the Country surrounding them—have been understood, altered, and managed.

At its heart is a larger question: how might confronting unsettled histories help us build more respectful relationships with Country, landscape, and one another?

Hosted by the Department of Theatre Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the conference brought together artists, researchers, educators, and cultural practitioners from around the world. Across plenary sessions, performances, presentations, and shared encounters, participants explored how the arts respond to—and actively reshape—the social, ecological, and technological conditions of our time.

🎓 Introducing our Plenary Speaker, Charlotte Barker.

Charlotte Barker is the Chief Executive of the Institute of Designers in Ireland, the trade association for commercial designers on the island of Ireland. Charlotte sits on the Government Forum for Digital Creative Industries and supports the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform to progress the action plan for Designing Better Public Services. She is a member of An Bord for the National College of Art and Design.

After 20 years of agency life Charlotte took the reins of the IDI in 2020, leading the IDI into a new era, embracing new programmes and partnerships to raise the profile and impact of Irish design. This includes instigating the sustainability platform Design Declares in collaboration with the 100 Archive, and leading a programme of work under the Roadmap for Digital Creative Industries.

Charlotte recently led Design 2035, a research project to create a vision of where Irish design will be in 10 years’ time. It provokes how, as a design community, we fully embrace the opportunities that are available to designers and ready ourselves for the future.
