They're shopping for whoever answers.

Water where it shouldn't be. Heat that quit. A fence that isn't up before the dogs get out. That's not a comparison shop, it's an emergency — and emergencies go to the first person who picks up.

You don't need to be the cheapest. You need to be reachable. Answer first, quote second.

Do this before you spend another dollar on ads.

Open last month's inquiries. Every call, text, form and DM.

Count the ones you followed up on twice. Not once. Twice.

Now multiply what's left by your average job.

That's not a marketing problem. That's money you already earned and didn't collect.

Fix it first. It costs nothing and it's faster than any campaign.

A brochure doesn't answer the phone.

That's what most contractor websites are. Something a prospect reads at 9pm to decide you look real, then they call tomorrow between 8 and 5. If they remember.

The website worth paying for does the boring part: what you do, where you do it, roughly what it costs, and a way to raise a hand that doesn't need you holding a phone.

Brochures get admired. Employees get paid. Build the employee.

Every inquiry has 5 checkpoints. Miss one, lose the job.

1. Captured — written down somewhere that isn't your memory.
2. Answered — same hour, ideally same ten minutes.
3. Routed — someone specific knows it exists.
4. Visible — every one of them in one place you can look at.
5. Followed up — twice, minimum.

Most owners do 1, 3 and 4 by hand and quietly skip 2 and 5. Then they call it a slow month.

Write your five down. Circle the one that breaks. That's your next purchase — not more leads.

Stop buying leads.

Your phone isn't the bottleneck. Your follow-up is.

Here's the test: two people call this afternoon while you're on a roof. One leaves a message. The other dials the next name on Google.

You didn't lose that job because your ad was weak. You lost it because nobody answered.

More traffic into a leaky bucket isn't marketing. It's an expensive way to feel busy.

Fix the bucket. Then buy the traffic.
