You don’t need a cabin in Colorado or a round of trust falls to build a more collaborative team.

Sometimes it starts with something much simpler: understanding the people you work with.

Some people naturally collaborate. Others are more reserved. Some want to take action immediately, while others need time to process before they move forward.

None of those approaches are necessarily right or wrong. The key is understanding those differences—and learning how to work with them instead of against them.

That’s where better communication starts. And ultimately, where better collaboration begins.

💬 How well does your team understand how each other works?

🚨 Hiring Myth Monday

Myth: An overqualified candidate probably won’t stay.

It’s easy to look at an experienced candidate and assume they’ll get bored, leave for something better, or simply won’t be satisfied in the role.

But what if they’re intentionally looking for something different?

Less stress. A career change. An individual contributor role instead of management. Different responsibilities. A work environment that fits them better.

Experience tells you what someone has done. It doesn’t necessarily tell you what they want next.

Before deciding an overqualified candidate is a flight risk, give them the opportunity to tell you their story.

💬 Have you ever hired someone who looked overqualified on paper but turned out to be a great fit?

Building a team full of “A players” sounds like the goal—but what happens when all of those A players bring the same strengths to the table?

The strongest teams aren’t made up of people who all think, work, and solve problems the same way. They have complementary strengths.

The creative thinker needs someone who can execute. The person ready to spring into action benefits from someone who slows things down and catches the details. The challenger needs someone who can help build consensus.

Instead of asking, “How do we find another person like our best performer?” try asking:

💬 “What could this person add to our team that we don’t already have?”

🚨 Hiring Myth Monday

Myth: Having a degree guarantees someone is the better candidate for the job.

For some roles, a degree is absolutely necessary. But for many others, is it truly a requirement—or is it there because it’s always been there?

Years of hands-on experience, certifications, military experience, and demonstrated skills can all bring tremendous value to a role.

Before passing on a qualified candidate because they don’t check the degree box, it may be worth asking one simple question: Why does this job actually require one?

As Steve puts it, a degree can open the door, but it shouldn’t be the only way through it.

💬 Are there roles in your organization that still require a degree when experience could be just as valuable?

Football season is back—and every team is making decisions about talent.

Who makes the roster? Who gets cut? Who moves into a different position? What combination of people gives the team the best chance to win?

Businesses face many of the same questions.

Building a strong team isn’t just about having talented people. It’s about understanding where they fit, what they bring to the team, and how to put that talent in the right position to succeed.

🏈 **Are you evaluating your team as intentionally as a coach evaluates theirs?**

Are you coaching every member of your team the same way?

Some people want direct feedback. Others need context, autonomy, or a clear step-by-step plan. The expectation may be the same—but the way you communicate it can make all the difference.

Understanding the behavioral tendencies of the person in front of you gives leaders the opportunity to coach, motivate, and develop each employee in a way that actually connects with them.

**Good coaching doesn’t mean changing the standard. It means changing how you help someone reach it.**

💬 What have you found works best when coaching different personalities on your team?

🚨 **Hiring Myth Monday**

**Myth: Job-hopping automatically means someone is unreliable.**

Several jobs on a résumé can raise questions—but they shouldn't automatically answer them.

Career growth, layoffs, leadership changes, or simply discovering that a role wasn't what was promised can all lead someone to make a move.

Instead of making an assumption based on the résumé, uncover the story behind it. You may find that the candidate you almost passed over is exactly the person your team needs.

💬 **Be honest—have you ever seen a candidate's job history and immediately questioned their reliability?**

08/14/2026

AI can create a résumé that looks like the perfect match for your open role.

But does it reflect the person you’re actually about to interview?

As tools like ChatGPT and Claude make it easier than ever for candidates to tailor résumés to a job description, employers need better ways to evaluate what really matters beyond the résumé.

Join TalentThrive CEO Nathan Guard for our upcoming webinar, **AI Resume Fraud: Is Your Hiring Process Prepared?**, and learn how objective data can add another line of defense to your hiring process—helping you evaluate fit quickly and make more informed decisions before your competition gets to the best talent.

Can you “game” a behavioral assessment?

You can certainly try. But if you’re changing your answers based on what you *think* an employer wants to see, you may actually be working against yourself.

Different roles call for different behaviors, and the goal of an assessment is to understand what **you naturally bring to the table**.

After all, if you have to pretend to be someone completely different to fit the role, is getting hired really a win?

💬 Have you ever been tempted to answer an assessment based on what you thought the employer wanted?

🚨 **Hiring Myth Monday #3**

**Myth:** Your best employee will naturally become your best manager.

Sometimes? Absolutely.

But being great at the job and being great at leading others require very different skill sets.

Your top salesperson, engineer, or technician may have earned the opportunity to lead—but leadership also requires the ability to coach, mentor, teach, and make decisions at a different level.

As Steve puts it:

**Performance earns the opportunity. Leadership earns the promotion.**

💬 Have you ever seen a top performer struggle after being promoted into management?
