Scammers use LinkedIn to find new employees and people working in finance, payroll or IT. Job posts and staff updates can reveal names, roles, software, clients and travel plans. Review what your company and employees share publicly.

The best cybersecurity practice you can develop is to be skeptical of everything.

You might already be careful with unexpected emails, phone calls and unknown links, especially when someone asks for a password or payment details. That same caution should apply to QR codes, even when they’re printed on something that looks official.

Scammers are taking advantage of how comfortable we’ve become with using them. When you’re scanning a code to pay for parking or open a menu, you’re probably thinking about getting on with your day, rather than checking who put it there.

But someone could have covered the original code with their own. You could then end up on a fake website that looks convincing enough for you to enter your details without realizing anything is wrong.

There are a few things you should check before scanning a code and before entering information on the page it opens. Knowing what to look for can help you spot a scam you might otherwise have missed.

An AI meeting assistant may record audio, create a transcript and store a summary online. Decide which tools employees may use, which meetings they may join, who can access the files and how long theyre kept. Tell everyone before recording. We can help you set the rules.

A potential customer may send you a security questionnaire before signing a contract. Keep your policies, insurance details, recent test results and other proof in one place. If you don't know an answer, check it instead of guessing. Send us the form if you need help.

Before you scan a QR code:
Check printed codes for stickers covering the original.
Check who sent emailed codes, especially if the message unexpectedly asks you to log in,
verify an account or reset a password.
See whether you can open the company’s website or app yourself instead.

If you do scan, check the website address before entering passwords or payment details. And don’t download anything you weren’t expecting.

Keep an inventory of company laptops, phones, servers and network equipment. Record each item's model, serial number, assigned person, location, warranty and replacement date. Update it whenever equipment is bought, moved, reassigned or retired. We can help build the list.

Camera and microphone access can stay enabled after you allow a website or app to use it. Review the permissions in Windows and your browser, then remove access for anything you no longer use or recognize.

You probably scan QR codes for all sorts of things, from paying for parking to reading a menu or connecting to Wi-Fi.

Scammers use them too, directing people to fake websites that ask for passwords or payment details.

This type of phishing is called quishing, and it can be difficult to spot when you’re in a hurry.

There are a few things you should check before handing over your information.

Positive Pay helps catch altered or fake checks. You send your bank the check number and amount for every check you issue. It flags checks that don't match. Some banks also compare the payee name. Ask your bank what its service checks.

Never change an employee's payroll bank details using email alone. Call the employee on the number already stored in your HR records or speak to them in person. Have a second person approve the change and record how it was verified.
