Meet the newest member of the SCDOT Surveys Team! 👋🚤

This small boat or unmanned surface vessel (USV) helps our surveyors map the bottom of rivers, ponds, and lakes to better understand underwater terrain before designing nearby roads and bridges.

It also allows the team to safely survey areas that are too deep for chest waders or otherwise hazardous to access on foot.

Big news for York County residents. A bridge replacement project is wrapping up in Rock Hill.

SCDOT contractors have been hard at work to replace the bridge on Zinker Road that runs over Fishing Creek. The bridge, which was previously load restricted, will have an improved foundation and increased elevation. In addition, residents will see crews performing asphalt repairs down Zinker Road leading up to the bridge.

Construction is on track to wrap up by the end of November. Please continue watching out for crews as they finish the project. 👷‍♂️

There’s a newly improved intersection in Greeleyville 🛣️

In September, SCDOT contractors completed a project at the intersection of Easler Highway, Holliman Road and Old Greeleyville Road. The goal of this project was to realign the intersection to help improve safety. This project also implemented several other upgrades like roadway resurfacing, sidewalk rehabilitation, new pedestrian ramps and curb and gutter
construction.

These improvements are just one of many ways that SCDOT is committed to increasing safety for all road users. 👍

Major upgrades are underway in Marlboro County. SCDOT contractors are hard at work to replace the bridge on SC 83 that runs over the Little P*e Dee River. 👷

When reopened, the new bridge will boast an elevated height, improved lane width and a modern design. Motorists can look forward to traveling this primary route again soon, the project’s completion is targeted for the end of the year. 👍

To better serve trucking and freight across South Carolina, SCDOT has recently automated the process of issuing eligible oversize and overweight permits to get approved permits to our customers faster. 🚛 💨

The impact?
✅ Quicker approval of eligible permits
✅ Over 40% of permits are auto-issued
✅ More time for staff to review more intensive requests and bridge safety evaluations

This builds on SCDOT’s commitment of efficient operations and keeping oversize and overweight loads moving safely throughout South Carolina. 👍

We recently wrapped up safety improvements on US 17 in McClellanville, and the difference is night 🌙 and day ☀️

Crews have been working around the clock to improve the pavement, guardrails, and road markers on nine miles of the highway!

And best of all, we’ve got even more improvements planned for US 17 next year. 😎

Now entering Phase 2! 😎

The southbound side of the new US 21 bridge over Congaree Creek in Lexington is complete, and crews are moving on to the next phase!

Crews will build up the asphalt, demolish the old bridge, and shift traffic onto the new structure to make room for construction on the northbound side.

The new bridge is built with stronger materials and is 5 feet higher than its predecessor, designed to prevent overtopping during excessive rain events.

Work is expected to wrap up in late 2027.

🦇 Bat Week 2026 is here! 🦇

SCDOT works alongside partners like South Carolina Department of Natural Resources to help protect these amazing little creatures.

From timing construction work, like tree clearing and bridge demolition to help keep bats safe, to modifying culverts with habitats in mind, we're working to help South Carolina's roads and local wildlife thrive together! 🖤
