🚨 The $25,000 wall just came down.
As of June 4, 2026, the Pattern Day Trader rule is officially dead - no more $25K minimum, no more PDT flag, no more counting your trades.
Here's what changed, and what it means for how you trade going forward 👇
FINRA created the PDT rule back in 2001, in the aftermath of the dot-com day-trading boom. The setup was simple: make four or more day trades in five business days in a margin account, and you got flagged. Once flagged, you had to keep at least $25,000 in the account at every market close - or get restricted to closing positions only.
That era is over.
As of June 4, here's what's gone:
❌ The $25,000 minimum equity requirement
❌ The 4-trades-in-5-days counter
❌ The PDT designation itself
❌ The 90-day account freeze
In its place: a real-time intraday margin framework. Instead of counting your trades, brokers now measure your actual risk throughout the day. Buying power is calculated from real-time margin excess - factoring in position concentration, volatility, and sector exposure.
Two things worth knowing: the standard $2,000 margin-account minimum still applies (that's separate from the old PDT rule), and rollout varies by broker. Some have flipped the switch already, others have until October 2027 to fully implement.
What it actually means: more access, more freedom… and more rope. The mechanism that forced undercapitalized accounts to slow down is gone. The guardrail is no longer the rule, it's you.
If you're starting small in this new era:
→ Size by risk, not by what your buying power allows
→ Define your max loss per trade before you click
→ Treat leverage as a tool, not a green light
The PDT rule was an accidental brake. Now you have to build your own.
Bottom line: this is arguably the biggest change to retail trading access since commissions went to zero. The door is open wider than it's been in 25 years.
