Take a length of wire and wind it into a tall narrow coil. Now take an identical length and wind it short and wide instead. Same material, same amount, and the two behave nothing alike. The tall one runs fast. The squat one runs slow. He worked this out the hard way, winding coil after coil to find where the tradeoff actually sits, because efficiency and the balance between the two fields shift with the proportions too. It is also where the work stops being electrical and starts being mechanical, which is where a lot of capable people get stuck.
