What do you look for or ask for when buying flexible LED strips? First, track record. Does the vendor have a good track record and positive reviews, next up is the strip manufactured to withstand the harsh marine environment and materials. Here's something to think about during halftime. Are you buying a dual layer strip or single layer, Do the LED modules utilize copper or gold bonding wires, do you know the copper content of the strips because it does vary, alot.

1. The Dual-Layer Copper FPC (The Highway)
The backbone of a flexible LED strip is the Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC). A "dual-layer" strip features two distinct layers of rolled copper foil sandwiched inside the flexible polyimide base.
• The role of copper: Copper is used purely for the main circuit traces because it provides massive current capability and excellent heat dissipation.
• Why two layers?
Doubling the copper thickness (typically to 2–3 ounces) reduces voltage drop over long distances and draws damaging heat away from the sensitive LED chips.
2. The Gold Bonding Wires (The Bridge)
Inside the individual microscopic SMD or COB LED diodes mounted on that copper track, there are microscopic wires called bonding wires.
• The role of gold:
Premium manufacturers use 99.9% pure gold wire to connect the LED semiconductor chip electrodes to the copper substrate frame.
• Why gold?
Unlike copper, gold is a noble metal that does not oxidize or corrode over time (think saltwater environment). Because LED strips flex and heat up repeatedly, gold wires ensure the microscopic weld points remain highly stable, preventing the pixels from flickering or dying out prematurely. Low-cost strips often swap this out for cheaper copper or alloy wires.

3. Gold Plating on the PCB Surface (Optional Premium Feature)

In some elite-tier architectural LED strips (such as "Immersion Gold" or ENIG series), the manufacturer will chemically apply a microscopically thin surface layer of pure gold on top of the copper soldering pads.
• This prevents the outer copper pads from tarnishing in storage.
• It makes field-soldering wires onto the strip much smoother, faster, and more secure.
Now for what you don't know, everyone of these benefits is manufactured into our IP68 strips. Dual layer PCB, 2oz of copper per sqft, gold bonding wires because saltwater, gold plating on our pads. Do you know what else is there, marine grade 18" tinned leads and genuine 3M waterproof double sided tape.
