Every once in a while I come across a photo that stops me in my tracks. Of course we’ve all seen this photo. But I didn’t know the story behind it until today. Please read along as I cover the story across this series of photos.
-
This is Corporal Leonard Hayworth, a 22 year old Machine Gunner with Baker 1/5, part of the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade. This series of photos was captured on or around September 4th on No Name Ridge along the Naktong Perimeter by renowned photographer David Douglas Duncan.
-
“A Corporal Machine Gunner, named Leonard Hayworth, slithered over from the top of the hill. He had come back for more grenades. He and other Marines along the line were hurling them down over the lip of the ridge to boat the against-advancing Communists of its face. He was told that there were no more, nor was there more ammunition for his machine gun, nor reinforcements to take the place of the wounded and dead…more even communication with the rear.

His eyes swing searchingly along the edge of the ridge, then up into the rainy sky. Slow, heavy tears started down across his face.

In a voice almost impossible to understand, for he worked over each word as though it was nearly beyond his power to form it upon his lips, he choked brokenly, ‘can’t see em. Only two us still there. Can’t see em. Rest dead…wounded. Grenades! Grenades! Can’t see em! Can’t see g***s in the rain. Can’t see! Keep killing us! Where hell mortars?’

When told that all the fire observers for the mortars had been wounded or killed, he sat numbly for a moment, then faltered on, asking for more grenades…mortars…even some rifle ammunition. He just wanted something to take back to his buddy up forward still holding their position.

Then he reached into his pocket and found that even his to***co was empty.

When it seemed that the Machine Gunner was shattered beyond all hope, a black-jawed, smiling old veteran crawled over from where he had just dragged in another wounded. Sitting shoulder to shoulder with the younger man, he calmly told him how they were still holding the line — and that no hook in the world could break through United States Marines.

The grimy old veteran talked
