With Downtown Lansing’s iconic Trick or Treat on the Square fast approaching, we’re back with another installment of Characters on the Square. Tonight, sugar-fueled children will descend on the Square in one of the neighborhood's most quintessential traditions. Consider this your starter pack for the annual candy-fueled takeover:

- A plastic pumpkin bucket already working overtime.

- A pillowcase that suggests a trick-or-treater is planning for a much longer evening.

- A family with coordinating costumes that fully committed to the bit.

- Dressed up dogs. We repeat: Dressed up dogs.

- A vaguely familiar character costume that you can’t quite place.

- Comfy Velcro sneakers and a long-sleeve tee layered under a floor-length princess gown.

- Enough face paint to survive a full-contact football game.

- A parent carrying three jackets, two water bottles, a balloon animal, and everyone else’s candy.

- Another parent taking advantage of the social district drinks.

- Halloweentown vibes in the heart of Downtown Lansing.

In our industry, the work can get stale fast if you're not devoting some regular time to expand your wheelhouse. Usually, what that means for our team is the freedom to go on deep dives to learn a new skill or chase down information in the name of creative development.

Recently, a Chia Pet showed up in the kitchen and no one’s entirely sure where it came from. In the midst of webinars, lunch and learns, and Reddit-thread rabbit holes last week, we also started investing in the "creative development” of this little guy.

Everything in moderation, right?

Our next Character on the Square starter pack:

The elementary school field trip kids that descend on the Capitol each fall. It’s that time of year when Downtown Lansing becomes a sea of children who have just learned approximately 47 new facts about Michigan government.

- Brightly colored matching T-shirt with a prominently displayed elementary school name.

- Teacher leading the way with a tiny flag like they’re venturing an expedition into the wilderness.

- A paper bag lunch packed with a sandwich, a juice box, and – if they’re lucky – dinosaur fruit snacks.

- A school bus parked somewhere that definitely wasn’t designed for a school bus.

- A missing front tooth that makes every smile 10 times bigger.

- A backpack containing one water bottle, two pencils, and a rock they found on the sidewalk.

- The awe-swept face of a child who has laid under the Capitol Rotunda for the first time.

- At least one shell-shocked chaperone who looks like they’ve aged five years since the bus arrived.

- Unbridled excitement about the gift shop.

Spartan women make history, and a bit of design helps tell the story. We teamed up with MSU Alumni design and write for their activation space installation at Crain’s Detroit Business’ Women of Influence event earlier this month. The panels and blocks spotlight two of Crain’s awardees alongside many trailblazing women Spartan alumnae throughout history.

We always enjoy the opportunity to celebrate the women making an impact and to give their stories the spotlight they deserve.

We have yet to meet a challenge we couldn’t project-manage to completion. We’ve never painted a crosswalk before, but what we did have was 1) an idea, 2) some experience with public art projects, 3) knowledge of the proper channels for requesting a street closure, and most importantly 4) an illustrator on staff.

(Shout out to Kelly Glass for bringing the perfect level of whimsy to our street with this design.)

Behind this project were hours of design work, measuring, stencil printing, stencil taping (so much taping), paint mixing and a lot of help from friends. Thanks to Downtown Lansing Inc. for lending a hand and agreeing to help us with this. We also owe a huge thank you to everyone who was willing to pick up a brush and sit on the asphalt with us. Our team is quite proud of how this turned out, and if there's one thing this project reinforced, it's that a solid plan (and a lot of paint trays) can turn a big idea into something real.
