Carrier unlocking removes a SIM restriction so your phone works on a different network. Not us, and it has nothing to do with your data.

The trouble starts when people run that same software on a drive that's clicking, overheating, not showing up in the file explorer, or throwing read errors. Every scan writes to the drive and can overwrite the very data you're trying to save, turning a recoverable case into a permanent loss.

A snapped USB connector is one thing — the board underneath is usually fine. But what about a drive that's actually shattered, cracked clean in half, case and all?

Same answer, more often than people expect: the NAND memory chip is a separate, tougher component than the plastic shell and connector around it. As long as that chip itself isn't cracked, scorched, or crushed, chip-off recovery — desoldering the chip and reading it directly on specialized hardware — bypasses the broken connector, controller, and board entirely. It works on drives that were run over, stepped on, or literally snapped in half.

The one thing that actually loses data afterward: trying to glue, solder, or force the pieces back together yourself before a lab looks at it.

On a hard drive, a deleted file often sits there until something writes over it — sometimes for months. An SSD doesn't work that way. In the background it runs housekeeping called TRIM that proactively erases those blocks within minutes, so it can write new data faster. Great for speed. Bad if you deleted something by mistake — the recovery window closes far sooner than people expect.

What usually DOES survive: if the drive itself fails — won't mount, vanishes from BIOS, controller dies — the files on the chips are often untouched, because TRIM never got the chance to run. The key that unlocks that data lives in the drive's own controller, so the fix is reviving that controller, not pulling chips off the board.

Accidental delete: minutes matter. A dead/undetected SSD: different problem, often still recoverable.

Your hard drive's SMART status can say "Healthy" the day before it dies completely. SMART tracks things like reallocated sectors and read errors, but it doesn't reliably catch a head about to crash or a motor about to seize — the two most common ways a hard drive actually fails. So don't treat "no warnings" as a reason to skip backups. What SMART misses, your ears usually catch: any new clicking, grinding, or repeated spin-up/spin-down noise means stop using the drive immediately and power it off. That's the one warning that's actually reliable — continuing to use a clicking drive, or restarting it over and over hoping it "wakes up," is what turns a fixable case into a real loss.

USB-A, USB-C, Micro-USB — five common flash-drive connectors, and people always ask which BRAND is more reliable. Honest answer from 27 years on the bench: it's not really the brand. SanDisk, Kingston, PNY and Lexar all show up in roughly the volumes you'd expect from market share — none are failure-proof, none are unusually fragile. What actually predicts failure is controller quality, manufacturing batch, and how hard a drive gets used (constant plug/unplug, riding loose in a pocket, or a cheap counterfeit chip). One real, documented exception: some SanDisk drives have had firmware issues serious enough that SanDisk published its own fix. And a broken connector — bent pins, a cracked shell — almost never means the chip underneath is damaged. We read it directly.
