Last week I spoke to a vacation rental company owner who has a direct booking website but didn't put much effort into a strategy for driving traffic to it because of the competition in organic search. He did have the right idea by building a contact list for targeted marketing.

Getting organic, natural growth for your website is possible with the right strategy.

Relying too heavily on paid ads can be risky and expensive but focus your efforts on optimizing your site for search using these techniques:

- Focus on creating high-quality, helpful content that answers your audience's questions and provides value. Review the "People also ask" area of Google search results to identify questions you can base content on.

- Use SEO best practices like keywords, proper content heading tags, and meta descriptions. Organic growth relies on the foundation of a well-designed site that implements these practices.

- Encourage social sharing and word-of-mouth referrals. Delighted customers are the type of marketing you can't pay for. Encourage them to share their stories and have a referral program that will reward them for it!

Many companies have no Internet marketing strategy.

- Create a website without addressing their ideal customer(s)
- Write blog articles that provide no value to ideal customers
- Post to social media with no strategy behind the post
- Never take the time to review Google Analytics and Search Console to understand what parts of their efforts are working and what parts are not.

Instead of taking the time to search for their ideal customers, the needs of those customers, and the questions they ask to arrive at a purchase, they instead market to a general customer base. By marketing to a general customer base, they yield general results.

By taking the time to identify more specific customers and marketing to them, you build a higher level of comfort and trust. Buyers purchase on the basis that they are understood. How can you identify these customers? Through research and listening. Need an example? Let's look at how a vacation rental company could do this...

Listen:
- A great starting point is to review customer inquiries via phone calls and emails to your reservation team and keep a log of their routine questions. These are great for further research and addressing on your website.
- Use these as an FAQ page on your site. While some potential customers ask, others may see it as a barrier to first contact. Reduce that barrier by having answers available on your website.

Research:
- Review Google Analytics and Search Console to understand what drives people to your site and what they do on it.
- Visit Google and start with a "General" search, then expand to the queries you identified in Search Console. For example, "Destin, Florida Vacation Rentals."
- Scroll halfway down for the "People Also Ask" section. These are common questions commonly searched.
- Scroll further down to the related searches. Click through to these and review the "People Also Ask" as well.

Breaking your services down into the benefits your client wants to achieve is beneficial.

There was a day when I would use the term SEO or CRO, and the eyes of a potential client glaze over. I have gotten so much more intentional about speaking my customer language.

It doesn't matter what the industry is. There are always inside terms that we take for granted and think everyone should understand.
Stop it!

Break down the phrases you use into terms past clients have used to ask for that service.

Tell it in a way that shows a benefit for or takes away your prospect's pain.

Show Value!

Describe what's in it for your potential customer by using your product or service.
