Interfacing sensors, switches, and actuators with modern industrial PCs requires a clear understanding of Digital Input/Output (DIO) architecture.

Without optocoupler isolation and proper current wiring, industrial signal noise can lead to costly operational downtime. Our latest blog post breaks down how DIO operates directly in the field. Learn how Contec's isolated digital I/O cards and USB modules deliver noise-immune, high-density control for factory automation, testing rigs, and monitoring systems.

Deploying Edge AI in mission-critical environments leaves zero margin for hardware failure.

Standard commercial platforms often struggle when faced with real-time operational demands, harsh thermal environments, and unpredictable network connectivity.

Our latest blog post recaps Contec Americas and at Interop 2026, showcasing DUST: a battle-tested edge intelligence platform. By pairing Syllego's AI-driven orchestration engine with Contec's fanless industrial hardware (featuring our GMB-IPLS00 embedded board and long-life motherboards), DUST processes raw sensor data locally on-premises.

This eliminates cloud latency, reduces bandwidth costs, and maintains military-grade security behind your firewall. Discover how our co-engineered hardware solutions keep critical defense, public safety, and industrial operations running continuously without downtime.

What key environmental, hardware, and lifecycle criteria must be evaluated when selecting an industrial computing platform for mission-critical deployments?

In high-availability operational environments, relying on commercial-grade PCs introduces severe risk through premature component failure, thermal throttling, and short supply lifecycles.

Key Technical Evaluation Criteria for System Architects:

Thermal and Environmental Resilience: Validating fanless, sealed chassis designs under strict zero-wind testing to maintain maximum compute throughput across extreme temperature ranges.

Form Factor and I/O Compatibility: Aligning physical space constraints (DIN-rail, panel mount, or rackmount) with essential expansion requirements like PCIe slots, isolated digital I/O, and dual network isolation.

Lifecycle and BOM Stability: Choosing embedded systems with fixed Bill of Materials (BOM) revision control and extended 10-to-15-year lifecycle commitments to eliminate hardware redesign loops.

A structured hardware evaluation strategy minimizes operational risk and lowers long-term total cost of ownership.

Something most engineers only learn the hard way:

The hardest part of a data acquisition project is not the integration. It is finding out two years later that your hardware vendor discontinued the platform your entire validated system is built on.

Vendor lock-in in DAQ stacks is a real operational risk, and it catches teams off guard more often than anyone admits. When a platform gets discontinued, you are not just replacing a board. You are reopening validation, re-sourcing components, and rewriting software that was never supposed to change.

We wrote about exactly this, and about what a hardware-first, long-lifecycle approach to data acquisition actually looks like in practice.

If your team works with DAQ systems, this one is worth a read. Link in the comments. ๐Ÿ”—:

Connecting legacy industrial equipment, barcode scanners, or specialized medical hardware to modern PCs requires a stable serial interface. Relying on basic commercial adapters often introduces transmission errors, port dropping, and a lack of proper electrical isolation.

Our latest guide breaks down the essential criteria for selecting industrial serial cards. Learn how onboard FIFOs, transient voltage protection, and strict Windows or Linux driver compatibility keep your automated communications running smoothly.
