The LEO satellite connectivity stack is maturing faster than most telecom architects anticipated — and the system-level implications deserve serious attention.

A few things worth examining closely:

Latency is no longer the dealbreaker it was with GEO :
LEO constellations operating at 550–1,200 km altitude have brought round-trip latency down to 20–40ms — comparable to many terrestrial broadband links. But the real engineering challenge has shifted: handoff frequency between satellites (every ~90 seconds at LEO), Doppler compensation, and inter-satellite link (ISL) routing are now the bottlenecks defining QoS at scale.

ISLs are changing the routing game :
Optical inter-satellite links eliminate the need for ground station hops on long-haul routes. In some transoceanic paths, LEO mesh routing is already demonstrating lower latency than subsea fiber — a structural inversion that has implications for financial networks, CDN architecture, and latency-sensitive applications.

Direct-to-device (D2D) is the protocol challenge nobody's solved cleanly yet :
3GPP NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) standards under Release 17/18 lay the groundwork for native satellite integration into 5G NR. But Doppler shifts of up to 24 kHz, HARQ timing constraints, and TA (timing advance) windows designed for terrestrial cells create real PHY-layer complexity when extending to LEO.

- Spectrum remains the hard constraint :
Ka-band congestion, ITU coordination timelines, and interference management between mega-constellations are underappreciated risks. The FCC/ITU regulatory backlog is arguably moving slower than orbital deployment — a gap that will matter as constellation density increases.

The technology is ahead of the standards, the standards are ahead of the regulation, and the regulation is ahead of the interference models. That sequencing rarely ends quietly.
