When the backup vendor is the breach.

A stolen ConnectWise Cloud Backup credential let attackers into customer Microsoft 365 environments without user interaction. Huntress confirmed unauthorized sign-ins in 162 tenants by Oct. 16, with broader activity detected across nearly 1,000. Some of the apps escalated their own permissions to Global Admin and added credentials for persistence. ConnectWise disabled the affected app identities on Oct. 17 and reset the credential on Oct. 19.

A backup platform is privileged access, not just software. Audit enterprise apps for credentials added since Oct. 13; disable affected apps rather than deleting them. Verify backups with a restore test: a green status email isn't proof.

Has your backup vendor ever needed admin-level access?

Fall paperwork is no time for guesswork: gray streaks on every page aren’t automatically a toner problem.

On the Brother HL-L2350DW, toner and drum are separate consumables. Brother’s print-quality guidance says to slide the green corona-wire tab fully side to side, then return it to home. Inspect the drum under good light; repeated marks in the same spot can point to drum damage or buildup. The DR730 drum is rated for about 12,000 pages.

Power down and let the printer cool before opening it. Never touch the drum surface. After replacing a drum, reset its counter so the printer tracks the new unit.

Free diagnostics are available at our Midtown Manhattan walk-in repair center.

What did the streak on your office printer’s pages turn out to be?

“Disk needs to be formatted” is not an invitation to click.

A 4 TB external HDD came in after repeated prompts and an interrupted CHKDSK pass. When a drive starts returning read errors, repeated attempts can add stress, and CHKDSK may write changes.

First response: unplug it. Don’t format, initialize, run CHKDSK or try third-party “fix it” tools. If the files matter, avoid browsing and dragging folders; make a disk image before file recovery, using a process that can handle read errors.

A drive can list folders while some sectors are unreadable. Free diagnostics are available at our Midtown Manhattan walk-in repair center.

What did you do first the last time a drive started acting up?

Battery cable first. Screws second.

HP’s March 2024 Maintenance and Service Guide for the EliteBook 840 G11 lists the bottom cover, memory and WLAN as customer self-repair parts; the 3-cell 56 Whr battery is for authorized service providers.

After shutdown and unplugging, remove the bottom cover’s five captive screws and release its hinge-side edges with a nonmarking, nonconductive tool. Disconnect the battery cable from the system board before removing its four M2.0 × 4.0 screws. Reassemble cable first, then screws.

Never puncture, twist or crack the battery; don’t grip its enclosure with tweezers or pliers, or bridge connectors with metal. Light clue: white = above 90%, amber = 0–90%, off = not charging, blinking amber = low battery.

Which guide detail has helped your team avoid a mistake?

“Plugged in, not charging” doesn’t automatically mean a dead battery.

A ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 came in stuck at the same charge all day. First, check whether the USB-C or slim-tip adapter negotiates power. Then test with a known-good charger before inspecting the battery connector and charging path under the base cover. The order matters: a charger issue can look like a battery fault.

For safe inspection, this model’s UEFI BIOS can disable the built-in battery: Config > Power > Disable built-in battery. Free diagnostics are available at our Midtown Manhattan walk-in repair center.

A tiny desktop blinking amber in a pattern is talking. Don’t just unplug it.

After an office move, a Dell OptiPlex 3000 Micro that won’t power on may be giving you a diagnostic clue. Dell’s service manual maps repeating amber power-indicator blink patterns to fault areas such as memory, the system board or power delivery.

Before ordering parts, count the repeating blinks and check the chart for this exact model. Then power down, unplug it, reseat the memory and internal cables, and retest once. Dell’s documented removal steps cover components including memory, the fan and heatsink. If the code persists, you’ve narrowed the fault area.

Where does your team keep the blink-code chart for move-day failures?

A ThinkPad that freezes and ignores the power button is asking for the reset hole, not a hard yank of the battery.

Lenovo's ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 service documentation maps this model's emergency-reset hole: with the machine unplugged, a straightened paper clip into the hole cuts power temporarily, then you reconnect and restart. That is the documented recovery path for a machine that stops responding and won't power off, and it's a far better move than repeatedly holding a dead button.

The manual also flags the trap that follows a successful restart: if UEFI was mid memory-retraining or self-recovery, the screen stays dark while the Esc, F1 and F4 indicators blink through their progress. Interrupting that with the power button mid-cycle is how a recoverable boot becomes a service call.

So the order matters: reset once with the clip, then let any blinking indicator sequence finish on its own. If the freeze returns on a schedule, that pattern is the real fault to chase.

Where is the reset hole on your ThinkPad, honestly, did you know it had one?

That dead strip along the fold line started in the hinge, not the screen.

On a Pixel 10 Pro Fold, a dark strip and dead touch after a hinge impact can trace to debris and panel-layer stress, not software. Its inner panel, protective layer and flex routing sit beside the hinge; an uneven gap can press on them at every close.

Map where image and touch fail; inspect for grit, a raised gasket or a proud edge. Test across the fold screen by screen, and check the outer display and cameras separately.

Keep it open and powered down. Photograph the strip’s exact endpoints; don’t fold it to retest. Free diagnostics are available at our Midtown Manhattan walk-in repair center.

That green UPS light can be lying by omission.

An APC Smart-UPS 1500 (SMT1500RM2UC) may pass its brief self-test yet lack enough battery capacity to carry a switch, NAS or server through a clean shutdown. As heating season starts in older NYC buildings, warmer server closets and a full summer of load can accelerate silent battery aging. Reported runtime is a calculation, not a measurement.

During a planned off-hours window, check the battery install date, record load percentage and runtime, review the event/self-test log, then apply a known load and measure actual runtime against the shutdown time you need. Reconfirm shutdown software still communicates with the OS after upgrades.

A brief, light transfer can pass while full-load runtime is already only minutes. The abrupt shutdown, not the outage itself, is what creates data-integrity trouble.

When did you last measure your UPS’s real runtime?

The hidden dependency in a Windows feature-update wave isn’t the laptop. It’s the sign-in chain and the app handoff.

Before updating an entire office, test one representative workstation:
• Sign out and complete a fresh authentication
• Confirm MFA and identity access
• Connect through the VPN from outside the office
• Launch the shared line-of-business application and complete a normal task
• Verify the rollback contact path, including who can approve a pause

A cached sign-in token can make a broken identity handoff look healthy. Test with a fresh sign-in, not just an already-open session.

Which step has caused the most friction in your office update cycles?
