Nobody hands new parents a childcare roadmap.

You get a schedule for vaccines. A checklist for the hospital bag. A month-by-month milestone tracker taped to the fridge. But the childcare timeline? You find out you were "supposed to start" only after you've already missed the window.

Here's what that timeline actually looks like, from newborn to kindergarten:

𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆 – 𝟯 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 This is when you start touring and putting down deposits — not because you have to decide anything yet, but because infant rooms fill up before some of these babies are even born. Infant ratios are the tightest of any age group, which means the fewest spots.

𝟯 – 𝟭𝟮 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗵𝘀 The return-to-work scramble. Maybe you start with a nanny or family help and transition to a center later. This is also when parents realize a "nice looking" facility and a "good" facility aren't the same thing — and they don't yet know what to actually ask on a tour.

𝟭 – 𝟮 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 Ratios loosen, more options open up, and this is often the first time families switch providers — usually chasing better hours, better fit, or a gut feeling that something wasn't right.

𝟮 – 𝟰 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 The real fork in the road: daycare vs. preschool vs. co-op vs. staying home. This decision quietly shapes kindergarten readiness, and most parents are making it with far less information than they'd like.

𝟰 – 𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 Kindergarten enrollment deadlines creep up fast, and there's a "summer before K" childcare gap that catches a surprising number of families off guard.

𝟱 – 𝟲 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 The job shifts from "childcare" to "coverage" — before/after-school care, summer camps, the in-between hours school doesn't cover.

Every one of these stages has a decision point, a deadline, and usually a scramble attached to it. Most parents figure this out the hard way, one panicked Google search at a time.

That's the gap we built OpenCubby to close — a childcare marketplace and directory for Phoenix and Arizona families, so you're not starting from zero at each stage, and you can actually compare and find care that fits your family before you're up against a deadline.
