Yesterday, the world lost the incomparable Dolly Parton. 🦋

Yes, Dolly gave us unforgettable songs, an unmistakable voice, and a spirit filled with humor and grace. But one of her greatest legacies will be the millions of children who discovered the joy of reading through Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

Inspired by her father’s inability to read and write, Dolly started the program in 1995 to send free books to young children in her Tennessee home county. Her simple idea grew into an international movement that now gives millions of books to children every month, regardless of their family’s income.

Dolly understood that when you put a book into a child’s hands, you give them more than a story. You give them confidence, curiosity, possibility, and the freedom to dream bigger.

Her voice will be deeply missed. Her generosity will keep speaking for generations.

We chose the narwhal as Alma’s mascot because it represents something we believe deeply: the most extraordinary things don’t have to be imaginary. They remind us to always stay curious, look beyond the surface and be so amazing that people think you are a myth.

Now here are a few wonderfully real facts about our "unicorn of the sea."

🦄 Narwhals live year-round in Arctic waters around Canada, Greenland, Russia and Norway.
🦄 A narwhal’s “horn” is actually an elongated tooth.
🦄 The tusk can grow nearly 10 feet long and weigh more than 20 pounds.
🦄 Most tusked narwhals are male, although some females grow tusks too.
🦄 A rare narwhal may have two tusks ... or none at all.
🦄 Narwhals can dive nearly 6,000 feet, more than a mile below the surface.
🦄 Unlike most whales, narwhals have no dorsal fin.
🦄 Narwhals typically travel in pods of two to ten, but summer gatherings can include hundreds or thousands.
🦄 Their skin becomes lighter and more mottled as they age.
🦄 Adult narwhals can reach 18 feet long and weigh more than 3,500 pounds.
🦄 Narwhals can live for approximately 50 years.
